AM FROM JAMAICA AND LOVE THE GREAT OUTDOORS
So we were here for one april week.. and Rowan open jamaica to us like a real paradise) take care, give advises, work like lifeguard and guide! real superman for tourists! ahh, exotic fruits and porridge for every breakfast. interesting house, bright garden, wi fi!! he always singing and joking! Rowan is real rasta and bright symbol of this world! :)
Great bed, great breakfasts, great garden to meditate and do yoga, and a great HOST! Rowan made us feel very at home and was very flexible and accommodating in every way. I would go back there again. I do feel like I have a new friend, and his precious garden, which he tends with loving care, he shares the fruits with all of us. We had a fantastic time.
Staying at Rowan's place was absolutely amazing, it is even better then the pictures. The house is cozy and clean and the garden has plenty of beautiful and unknown Jamaican plants. One of the best part of staying is Rowan's authentic cooking and hospitality.
The hosts, Rowan and Sharon, were very gracious and hospitable to me. I would say they went above and beyond my expectations. I would truly describe them as "people persons" as they seem to love having company over.
Just to keep the review real, the only minor inconveniences faced were a couple of days with water shortages caused by city infrastructure issues. Yet, the hosts went out of their way to ensure that you did not experience these inconveniences as they always seem to have a contingency plan.
I mean, really, what more can you ask for? To boot, the beaches are a $2 cab ride away. This is the place to stay in Mo Bay if you are not into the all-inclusive theme and you prefer the real thing.
P.S. Ooh, and the breakies were delish!
Rowan picked us up and we felt like being at home. We had a fantastic stay at Rowans place.
I enjoyed to watch him cooking and making breakfast, which was delicious and authentic.
His home is a wonderful place to relax, with a fantastic garden.
We slept very well at his home and enjoyed a lot.
He gave us such a warm welcome. Absolutely recommend!
It was awesome to stay with Rowan and get a feel for his Jamaica! We enjoyed chilling out in his beautiful garden and watching the endemic Jamaican mango hummingbird on his banana bloom. We enjoyed hanging with the locals in the neighborhood open air bar with some delicious jerk fish - just a short walk from his house. The symphony of the frogs at night was cool (although the dogs barking woke us up). The bed is super comfortable. Wireless worked good so we were able to stay connected.
On the way to his place from the airport we got patties, coconuts, fruit, and Scotchies jerk - absolutely the best! Rowan's authentic breakfast was perfect and more than we could eat.
Rowan helped us get around and see what we wanted to see. Our visit to Jamaica would not have been the same without Rowan!
(A couple things to note: The a/c wasn't going while we were there -- although there are strong fans and good airflow through the house. Note the location on the map. Also, there's not a lot of space in the bedroom for luggage and clothes.)
Highly recommend at least one night with Rowan to experience a piece of the real Jamaica!
We had a great stay at Rowan's place! Beautiful garden, amazing breakfast he makes and warmest welcome and hospitality from Rowan! So glad we stayed there, he made the best first impression about Jamaica on us, we will never forget! Highly recommend!
Rowan and his wife Sharon were the coolest. They made us feel welcome and comfortable in their home, and Rowan was nice enough to drive us a few places, and take us over to the town block party. They also told us we were welcome to any food or drinks in the house. They're very chill.
Just a tip: if you have to get a late night taxi back to his place (we tried at 1:30am), it'll cost US $20-40. You can negotiate, but they'll try their best to take advantage if you're obviously foreign. Also, you should know EXACT directions to his place in order to take a taxi. They don't know how to get there, specifically.
If you want a travel experience cut off from the reality of your destination, this is not for you. If you want a deep, rich encounter with the people, beyond seeing them as vendors and servants, come to Rowan Bailey's. Rowan fully shared his home with me, and his yard is one of the most spectacularly landscaped patches in all of Jamaica, including all the luxury hotels! Simply amazing. He regaled me with fruits I had never tasted, delicious food that sustained me, and all manner of guidance to help me negotiate my way around Montego Bay -- otherwise quite a challenge if you stray from the walled tourist compounds. We had wonderful discussions, his lovely partner Sharon was incredibly helpful and interesting, and they invited me to attend cultural events a tourist would never have known about, such as the private launch event for the Caribbean Shrimp Festival and the orientation to Organo Gold. Best of all, as a stranger in a strange land involved in difficult challenges, I knew I had a friend I could call on. How many stars does that rate??? If you want a first-world experience in a 3rd-world country, go get a hotel room. If you want to become part of where you visit, try a Piece of Jamaica at Rowan's in Rhyne Park, Montego Bay.
Rowan's place is absolutely beautiful, situated in the hills just above the shore. The garden is gorgeous and it's a super relaxing and peaceful place to spend a couple of quiet days :) If you need more excitement, you can get a cab to the Hip Strip for pretty cheap! I loved talking to and hanging out with Sharon, and Rowan went out of his way to make sure that we were taken care of and there was always a plate of fresh fruit... so much amazing food! We could not have asked for a better host for our stay in Montego Bay!
