We are a couple from Seattle, we moved to New Orleans in 2008. I work in the film/TV industry, and make music and films on the side. Katie, is a painter/visual artist. We love to travel, and we use airbnb when we do.

Ian and Katie were incredibly accommodating and the house is wonderful. It's clear they've put a lot of thought into creating a charming and memorable experience, in keeping with the surrounding neighborhood. We had a wonderful time in NOLA and our home base was a big part of it. I highly recommend taking them up on their offer of bikes since it is, by far, the best way to see the town. I only wish we'd had time to take them up on all their suggestions for things to do and see. The Super Sunday parade with the Mardi Gras Indians was a particular highlight we wouldn't have seen without our hosts/guides. What a wonderful place and neighborhood! We'll be back.
Katie and Ian were fantastic — the house was absolutely gorgeous, even better than the pictures, and they were perfectly communicative and friendly and welcoming. Their recommendations were all stellar (Bar Tonique, in particular, blew our minds completely — the BEST cocktails I have ever put into my body), and they were super nice when one of our group accidentally broke their cute vintage kettle. New Orleans is an amazing place to visit under any circumstances, and staying at Katie and Ian's place actually made it even better. We didn't want to leave. Loved it. Recommend it. Can't wait to go back.
At the end of the first episode of Treme, the hot band that you see is performing Vaughan's on a Thursday night, which is what we saw shortly after arriving at our lovely home in the Bywater - by merely walking about 100 feet to the left of our place. The brass band was hot, one of the better bands we saw that week, and that's saying something, as New Orleans is full of incredible musicians. As a musician myself, as well as a traveler of over 30 countries, I immediately was able to list New Orleans as one of my favorites within a day or two. A big part of that was the lovely Bywater home - far enough away from the pee-scented Bourbon street, yet close enough to enjoy the energy of the magnetic town. The hosts were extremely helpful and accomodating, walked us through the place and provided a list of local spots, several of them being the highlight of our trip (the aforementioned Vaughan's; the pork shoulder and pasta at Bacchanal were both fantastic; the vibe at Elizabeth's stellar; the Joint had solid bbq, JJ's sports lounge (1 block down) is divey but literally open 24 hours and well, we ended up at Jimmy's convenience store (two doors down) probably twice daily, often after 3AM.
We were so very glad we chose the neighborhood we did - the architecture is magical, the people down to earth and friendly. Getting to Frenchmen street took a very pleasant ten or fifteen minutes via bicycle, with plenty to see along the way, and the cab ride was $8-12. The home itself had a wonderfully functioning heater (we came during an unusually cold week), the hot water never let up, and there was a tremendous amount of charm. Would highly recommend
Check in was quick and easy. It was a very cool house with a lot of history. The neighborhood is a great local spot away from Bourbon St. There are many bars and local hang outs around the house in walking distance. We never felt unsafe staying here. You may hear that it's a bad area but after talking with the locals that was the label this neighborhood got pre-Katrina.
Ian and Katie are the kind of hosts that make using AirBnb so great. Easy to work with, responsive to questions/requests, and friendly.
Also, the house is set up well to offer you a flavor for the history and hipness of the area. Hope they don't mind me saying it as I am not sure they will be offering it in the future but we LOVED the bikes that they had on hand for us to rent. It added another layer of flavor to our stay - feeling like a local, exploring, and brought out the kids in us.
We absolutely loved staying in this very aptly described "Large Charming 3BR House in The Bywater." The house is incredibly cool and so full of old-school New Orleans charm. Also, Ian and Katie left us some incredible recommendations. You may want to, but you hardly have to leave the neighborhood because there are so many awesome restaurants/bars right around the corner.
- Awesome porch. Great for beer drinkin' and people watching.
- They have got some serious rug game goin' on.
- There's a blood orange tree!
- Perfectly situated between two pleasant dive bars (with many more right around the corner).
- Katie's art is spread all over the house, so you can feel like you're living in a gallery for a few days.
- COOL OLD APPLIANCES.
- Gorgeous natural light in the mornings.
- The muffins at Satsuma Cafe right down the street.
- Everything else at Satsuma Cafe right down the street.
- Late-night motown dance parties at Bar Redux right down the street. (Not sure if this happens all the time, but we were there on a Saturday.)
Thank you so much for sharing your home with us, Ian and Katie! We hope to be back very soon!
Ian and Katie met us right away, made us feel at home, and gave us some great local recommendations. The house is beautiful, clean, full of character and vintage wares -- exactly as described -- and was very comfortable for our group of five. We visited New Orleans to attend the Prospect biennial, which is spread throughout the city - We found that the Bywater was centrally located and also within close walking distance to great local eateries, galleries, and dive bars (Vaughan's! The Joint! Mimi's!) We had a blast and would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
Ian and Katie's place is absolutely amazing! We loved staying here. The neighborhood is really nice and quiet, but close to lot's of cool bars and cafes. It's also a close taxi and nice walk to Frenchman's street and into the French Quarter. Ian was really helpful throughout the entire stay and we will definitely be back!
Our stay at Ian and Katie's house was more than we could have hoped for! Ian met us at the house when we arrived and was super helpful about things to do in the area. The house was very affordable but also had all the amenities you would need for a comfortable stay. We fell in love with the old stove and fridge in the kitchen and found the house very charming overall. Comfortable beds, nice towels, nice smelly soap in bathroom. The house was well-located, with Jimmy's grocery store and a handful of good bars within walking distance. We enjoyed getting to know a different neighborhood in New Orleans and staying a bit farther from the craziness of Bourbon St. Cab rides to/from Frenchman's and the FQ were about 8-15, depending on the time of day/night. Our only regret was not trying out the Joint, apparently the best bbq in Nola! We'll be back!
Ian was kind the first and only time we met and spoke with him when he gave us the keys. The house is wonderful, spacious, unique and very clean. We enjoyed the neighborhood.
Ian was a great guest to have during SXSW, we are happy to have hosted him.
Jan and katie are very nice people: they communicate very well, and in a very direct way. they are polite, kind and correct and they used the apt as if it was their own: it was a pleasure to host them and they are warmly welcome to come back.
pleasant guests, great communication. all without problems. recommend further.
A very relaxed and happy creative couple. Its was fun to have them come and stay. Thanks for leaving your painting Katie ... hopefully you will both pass by to pick it up and spend some more time here.
Perfect guests! Friendly, punctual, clean and fun to have around.
They will take care of your house as if it's their own (they also rent out there own place)
They are very welcome next time
