Wonderful place to get back to the basics of life, enjoy a wood fire, cooking semi outodoors and saw dust toilet. Highlight was a clear crisp morning followed by a horse ride. Great value for this. Location and good value and excellent quality horse riding
Sol's little cabin was not available so we got to sleep in the Roulotte which was great!
Very cosy and clean - an ideal spot for a weekend getaway.
All the necessary items for our needs - and very easy to warm up in the evening thanks to a little wood stove.
Spectacular view and lovely woodland walks in the immediate vicinity.
The roulotte is situated in a secluded part of the propoerty which is nice.
We didn't have the pleasure of meeting Sol who was away but we had a chat with his wife when we were leaving. Very friendly and relaxed contact, we appreciated her trustfulness and discretion.
We would definitely recommend this place!
The host was very friendly and made us feel welcome. We did not stay in the cabin but in there roulette instead - it was very beautiful and in an absolutely outstanding location - the views were amazing. My only criticism would be that it was not very well stocked - there were no kitchen basics (oil, salt, pepper) and the candles were all burnt down and there was no firewood in the basket. Otherwise was a really delightful place and would go back again
I am no longer scared of horses. I have had no end of horrible experiences with bolting horses on farms, Pony Club martinets and over-regimented English riding lessons. But after 2 weeks of riding with Joan most days through the lovely beech and pine forests of the Pyrenees I have both conquered my fear and rediscovered the thrill of riding.
Joan has a stable of marvellous horses. My daughter had 'Jane', a Connemara "double poney" gelding (yes apparently he had the name from a previous owner), while I started with 'Suela', a Spanish mare, and then went on to 'Ulises', half-Arab and half-Breton. And I also had my first experience with a Western saddle. Bliss.
The riding is up and down hills, in woods, in fields, very occasionally along almost deserted country roads for a couple of hundred metres, through streams and among blackberry bushes, from which you can eat the ripe berries. Joan starts you off with grooming the horses and then teaches you how to tack up, which I'd done so long ago I'd forgotten everything. Then off you go for an hour or two, or half a day or even a whole day if you wish. Magical stuff.
And the riding is all in a 'natural' style—bitless and with loose reins save when you are actually communicating something to the horse. I found this much less stressful than the "grip with knees, tight reins" English style, and easier on both horse and rider. Within five 2 hour sessions, my 11-year-old had learned to canter and was pretty confident by the end of the fortnight.
Sol and Joan, and their children Anna and Ian, run a fantastic, comfortable and welcoming place in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It's only an hour and a quarter from Toulouse, and only about 4 hours drive to Barcelona. You are about 45 minutes from the high mountains and an hour from the historical towns of Foix, Pamiers and Mirepoix. We went river-rafting, did "accrobranche" (swinging through trees on wires) in 'Sequoia Vertigo' amidst giant redwoods, did a bit of history and spent a long time on the large veranda playing cards, Scrabble and watching the light changing over the mountains.
It's an idyllic spot and I'm almost tempted to leave a bad review because I don't want it to get too popular. But I can't because that would be unfair to Sol and Joan, and to all you others who might think of going there. The pool is great, and we didn't even get to try the sauna or hot tub; they are building a hammam which will add to the delights.
Lots of birds, singing frogs at night, a barbecue outside, friendly cats—and Izu (? spelling), the Jack Russell who accompanied us on all our rides and who became best friends with our dog, Stan. I'm still enjoying Joan's homemade Calvados and Slivovitz which he gave us as a parting gift. It—and everything else—will certainly ensure our return, Insh'Allah!
We had a wonderful time staying in this gorgeous little place. The cabin was cute and cosy and had everything we required and Sol and Juan were very attentive hosts. The view is absolutely breathtaking and it was wonderful to sit and eat outside overlooking the mountains! The pool was bigger than we expected and very refreshing in the heat.
Horse riding with Juan is a MUST! We went twice and absolutely loved it! He took us on two beautiful routes through the forest and took plenty of time before the ride to explain to us all about the horses and the equipment. You can tell that he truly loves and respects his animals and his enthusiasm is contagious. He will get you trotting and cantering! The experience was so much better than anything I have experienced in British riding schools, don't miss out!
