We spent two weeks to Zancudo surrounded with wild nature where crickets, iguanas, monkeys, parrots, toucans, geckos visited us. The sea, nearby, was strong at times but we had only to walk a little to find a peaceful sea. A magnificent place with very nice people. Margaret was a helper in several respects (medicine, repair of a flat tyre) and the house was well equipped.
Margaret was very accommodating in help us to find our way to Zancudo. The description was accurate and the house was nicer than expected. We are a very busy small business family and greatly appreciated the seclusion that this house provided, including the occasional visit from a white face monkey, Iguanas and howler monkeys. The short trip into Zancudo was facilitated by the very reasonable bike rental from Margaret. The local shop owner was also very helpful.
Hi, we are just coming back from our wonderful vacation in Zancudo. Margaret and her son Nick made sure we had a good time, providing us with the info we needed. The house is big enough for two couples or like in our case- 2 room mates. We had warm water in the showers and a hose and a shower for outside. Screens on all the windows and the Bugs were pretty much gone after the rain ended. The beach is very close by and the most relaxing experience. Great for walking every day! For anybody that needs some time off- the place to go! Thank you Margaret!
Me and my girlfriend stayed at the house for a month and were very pleased with the place. Margret and her son are great hosts and live very close by they are always willing to help with anything that is needed. The house is quiet and very relaxing. It is spacious and despite a lack of AC excessive ceiling fans kept the house cool and breezy. The amount of wildlife around the house was amazing three different kinds of monkeys, iguanas, beautiful birds and butterflies were all daily sights. We were even able to hand feed some of the monkeys bananas. The beach is a short walk and 95% of the time you are the only one on it. The fruit truck comes Thursday and Sunday and is stocked with local fruits and veggies that are very fresh and delicious. We had a great time.
Margaret was friendly and welcoming on our arrival, giving us all the information we needed on buying groceries, organizing a fishing trip and buying bread from Ellie. She also took us to meet the extremely colorful local community and on a grocery shopping trip to Paso Canoas, both of which we really appreciated.
On a positive note, this corner of Costa Rica is very special and very wild. We felt really thrilled to see three species of monkey in the garden, a sloth on the road to the shop, and also see dolphins, leaping rays, green turtles and flying fish on a boat trip.
While the area itself is stunning, the wet season brings its own challenges. The community´s name, Playa Zancudo - Mosquito Beach - is apt. It was difficult to enjoy the porch and the lush garden around the house as the mosquitoes were ferocious.
There were also some issues with the rental. As noted in a previous review, Margaret cautioned that we could only use the A/C sparingly or expect to pay an additional charge - a point that was not mentioned in the agreement and came as an unwelcome surprise.
The house itself is very dark, to the point that we had the lights on in the day in the living room and kitchen. In general, it felt gloomy and somewhat run down. The coffee maker was broken, the TV had three remotes - none of which we could get to work - while the couch is small and uncomfortable. The linens, the sheets and the towels were almost all old and some were worn out or stained.
We booked for a month, but left after three weeks. While we did not expect a refund for the last week, we were surprised that Margaret had immediately re-let the house. She then placed some pressure on us to leave early in the morning so that she could get the house cleaned for the next occupants. It was an awkward end to the trip.
The Jungle House, Zancudo.
The house sits comfortably back from the road, across from the beach. Although you cannot see the powerful ocean, you can hear and feel the waves from the house. The beach is practically secluded 24/7... absolutely amazing!
Jungle living allows for spectacular animal (and plant) sightings, including 3 species of monkey, dozens of reptiles, nesting birds, and Blue Morpho butterflies. The house feels like a wildlife sanctuary outside, and one can spend a lot of time observing from the front porch. Bring insect repellant; Zancudo is rich with life, including bugs that bite.
If you choose to cook here, you'll find the kitchen well-appointed, with a full fridge and freezer, juicer, blender, drip coffee and a propane stove (if you need to refill the tank, just take it down to Tres Amigos and they will exchange it for $20.)
We traveled here as a family, and the house was clean and ready when we arrived. For families, the house is spacious and in a safe location. Margaret
was very kind to buy a crib for our infant daughter to make it comfortable for us.
It is helpful to have a car here. The boats do not run regularly out of Golfito and private taxis are expensive because of the long, rocky roads.
If you need supplies, (to stock the house) any one of the small stores in town will likely have it (toilet paper, soap, trash bags, etc.).
The town of Zancudo is extremely laid back and quiet. Locals are friendly and will help when they can. Find Ellie (aka Las Bravos) for baked goods and pizza by order, and Emilio comes on Sunday and Thursdays with produce.
I would recommend this home for anyone who is flexible in spirit and loves the outdoors. Margaret is great at making herself available but allowing lots of privacy too.
I am listening and will work on it!
Margaret is a nice lady and she and her son are willing to help you with anything you need- you just need to ask. The house was as expected, except that, after accepting and paying, we were told we only had a $50 electricity credit for our one-month stay, and that using the air conditioning would run the bill up higher than that. Any overage was to be our responsibility. Also, if your stove runs out of gas, it is up to the tenant to pay for the new tank (9000 colones). These were just unexpected costs for us, and we would have liked to know about them up front.
The neighborhood was quiet and remote, with daily monkey visitors to the house. It's a short walk to the beach and a small 7-11 style store.
There were twice-weekly deliveries (Thursday and Sunday) by a fruit and vegetable truck, and a Saturday morning delivery of fresh eggs, milk, cheese, etc. Our neighbor, Ellie, makes and delivers baked goods and pizza...delicious!
Thanks for your feedback...the house is ready for updating i agree..I am surprised you didn't mention the uncomfortable couch lol....I will the info to the listing...sorry about that
We had a great time. Margaret was so helpful getting me adjusted to the area since was alone for the first couple of weeks
It is a beautiful setting and we had a really relaxing time.
I can't really explain why, but our stay at the Jungle Beach House in Zancudo was magical. My husband and I stayed for a month and everyday was special. We would begin each day watching the morning butterfly show as we enjoyed our coffee on the front porch. Each day, at low tide, we walked on what felt like a 5 mile long private beach. In the afternoon, once again comfortably seated on the front porch, we would listen to the waves and wait for the monkeys to join us. Mozart, the friendly local Toucan even came for a visit one day.
The house was comfortable and VERY private. The WIFI was great, the TV even showed old movies in English with subtitles. The kitchen was well supplied and we ate many delicious meals at home. The blender was my favorite thing as I enjoyed a daily fruit smoothie for lunch made with delicious fresh local fruit.
Margaret was wonderful and told us about all the local treasures - Ellie who baked wonderful bagels, bread and amazing cinnamon buns, Emilio, the fruit and vegetable man who came twice a week, the egg man and the many local eateries. We particularly enjoyed the Walnut Chicken at Restaurant Tranquillo just up the road.
Everyone we met was friendly, relaxed and enjoying life. Even after a month it was hard to leave and we are already planning our next visit.
thanks Barbara! will work on the couch, pillows and pots!
take care and hope to book you for next February!
We just wrapped up one fabulous, unforgettable experience staying in Zancudo at Margaret's Jungle Beach House and cannot say enough kind words!
The house is clean and fresh with beach and butterfly décor. Kitchen is a wonderful place to fix your fresh fruit and vegetables that you might pick up from the Thursday produce truck. All the dishes, kitchen utensils, and cooking appliances (coffee maker, toaster, blender) one could want for a night in or a morning breakfast (as one reviewer said: they have incredibly fresh eggs here). The big bed was super comfy, although my husband and I only occupied the one bedroom so I can't confirm the "comfy factor" of the second bedroom, but I'm sure it's great as well.
I won't lie, we basically lived on the porch. It is so private, so peaceful, it was hard to actually ever want to "start" our day and leave the house! A great way to read, relax in the hammock, have a beer, listen to the birds, watch the butterflies, enjoy the salamanders and iguanas...and nap, of course! You can hear the waves when you sit outside...
There is a TV if you should so choose to stay in, we sometimes did when the mosquitos started their night shift, and Jungle Beach House has quite a few cable channels (we felt guilty every time we turned it on, the sound of nature outside and knowing we were inside...:-(. LOL!
Margaret was always available when we dialed her number and through the many emails I sent, she knows quite a few folks in town and was always able to point us in the right direction. She has lived in Zancudo for several years and has some great connections. Very friendly and knowledgeable lady...thank you so much Margaret for everything!
Tres Amigos (small carryout) is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. I cannot stress this enough. Things are a bit spread out in Zancudo and this was such a blessing to have a place where you can pick up snacks and food for the week.
There is a lovely lady who bakes just down the road as well. Her name is Ellie at Olas Bravas, look her up and you won't be disappointed (to die for cinnamon rolls!) And she delivers!
Also, two restaurant we frequented: Sol y Mar (bit of a trek, worth the beach view) and Coloso del Mar (very close and screened in, out of the path of the nighttime mosquitoes). Both excellent food and excellent atmosphere!
Anyways, hands down, we would pick Jungle Beach House for any future visit to Zancudo. The house= beautiful. People of Zancudo= so friendly. The beach= gorgeous and as other reviewers have said, always empty (there is a public beach access right across the street).
You will not be disappointed!
