I spent a week in this lovely apartment while I was working at the Universidad de Costa Rica. The location turned out to be perfect as it was about a 10 minute walk to campus down Calle de la Amargura, which is definitely the most colourful street in San Pedro. The apartment is exactly as described and as it appears in the photos, and was very clean. The neighbourhood as well felt very safe and I had no trouble walking, even in the early evenings. Everything you need, from supermarket, banks, bars, restaurants, and shopping, is all within easy walking distance. I would highly recommend this apartment for an estancia in San Pedro!
Esteban's apartment was perfect for our needs. The neighborhood was quiet, we felt very safe and a grocery store was close enough to walk to, but not a short walk. It was exactly as the photos appear. The apartment was clean and our request for additional towels was met quickly. Thanks for having us, we'll be back!
Host: Esteban was there to meet me but did not respond to a text or email later in my two week stay.
Apartment: This is not an apartment. It's a house with three studios. The walls are incredibly thin and you can hear everything going on all over the building. One wall is entirely glass but there are missing pieces so mosquitos come in every evening and you can hear the very loud noise from the road. Also, there were mice. I saw them every evening and had to clean droppings up off the kitchen counters in the morning.
Location: Five blocks from the main road to catch buses or taxis. $4 taxi ride into San Jose. There was a supermarket about seven blocks away.
I do not recommend this place right now. If the owner chose to fix the windows, get rid of the mice and do some renovations, then it might be okay.
Esteban's apartment is very stylishly appointed and in a quiet region of the suburb of San Pedro, the city's University district. The furniture is all very comfortable, the space full of light. It was a lovely ace to spend four days in the city. My only complaint would be that the hot water seems to have been turned off our last two days there, or else had always been used up before we tried to take showers.
Staying in this apartment was wonderful! Esteban's neighbor, Carlos, was a godsend. He drove us to the grocery store, provided great conversation, and advised us on how to get around San Jose. There were kitchen supplies, soap, and towels waiting for us when we got there. The taxi driver knew exactly where the place was from the directions, but we weren't sure how to knock so we ended up asking neighbors and local businesses. We were lost for about an hour. I would recommend asking for specific directions about who will be waiting at the apartment, and how to knock, before you arrive.
We arrived in the middle of the night and took a taxi directly from the airport. We had thought we had arranged with Esteban ahead of time - in fact we had asked him if it was possible to leave a key in a lockbox and he told us not to worry as he would be waiting and there would be no problem. We gave him our flight details - so he knew when we would be arriving. On our way, the taxi driver was nice enough to call Esteban, but no answer. We circled the block about 10 times but, as there are not addresses or street names in Costa Rica, we could only guess what house was his by his description. We called Esteban about 10 times but no answer. We asked 2 security guards and no one knew him. This may have just been a glitch or a one time thing, but our advice is to make sure you call Esteban from the airport so he knows you are coming or set up a more sure way to meet him. 2 days later Esteban did contact us to see why we hadn't turned up, but it was too late, as our taxi driver had to find us another hotel and we had already worked it out directly with airbnb. Good thing we had a wonderful taxista - still cost us about $30 in taxi fare - but at some point he turned off his meter as he drove around town looking for a safe place with vacancy for us.
