I fell in love with Austin when I first moved here in 1982. I can't say I like all the changes in the past 15 years, as have serious concerns about the fast growth and it's impact on the culture, traffic and water conditions, but for now, Austin culture still embraces enough of what of helps "Keep Austin Weird" for me to want to keep calling it home. Got to love a city that makes that it's official city logo!
I feel fortunate to have purchased a home in the 78704 zip code before ACL and SX and Austin many other festivals began. I love my quiet little hood and neighbors and that is so close to so many convenient amenities, especially Stacey Pool , grocery stores, and South Congress shops and restaurants. I find hosting guests is fun and interesting. Every guest helps me experience Austin through new eyes. And I love that it helps me pay my ever increasing property taxes!
I am a long time meditation and yoga practitioner, and try to eat and live green and sustainably. I've been part of the ecstatic dance community for 18 years and enjoy all forms of performance art, but strangely didn't get involved in SX events till about 7 years ago. Every year brings it's own unique flavor and is a sort of creative juju baptism upon the whole city. It's impossible to take in all of SX , so my favorite music venues are the early morning concerts at the Four Seasons, because they are so intimate and feature many of of the best acts. A favorite neighborhood haunt though out the year is the Whip Inn. GREAT FOOD and home brews and wine, and an intimate stage.
I started using mostly bike and bus last year to reduce my carbon footprint and beat the traffic, and love what its doing for my health. I recommend using bike and bus over cars to my guests, especially during SX.
