After working in the film business for 10 years and retiring, I decided to do something more personally interesting to me. My interest in languages and Buddhist philosophy led me to pursue a PhD in Sanskrit and Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Oxford University. I moved to Hamburg, Germany though to finish my PhD, because of its worldwide reputation in teaching Sanskrit and Tibetan Buddhist studies. Philosophical literature in any language is dense and and difficult, but far more so in Tibetan and Sanskrit. It has taken me 10 years to gain the language mastery needed to translate texts into English and to understand the nuances of the different philosophical positions. In particular, I study the various theories of Buddhist meditation practice. Although my field study may seem dry or even book-wormish to some, I am generally an outgoing person with a very open mind and I like people very much.
