I am a garden designer living in an old lane house in the middle of the most populous city in the world, Shanghai. I love plants and books, and exploring this city and its culture!

This place was in a great location and very easy to get to from the train station. Communication with Ryan was fine before arriving. However I was shocked to awake in the middle of the night to the sound of a rat eating the apple I left on the coffee table. I emailed Ryan immediately the next day but didn't get a response until several days later after I left. He was traveling without access to internet, which was unfortunate and I can't fault, but it compounded the situation. The room itself is nice. I would say it is more of a single room than an entire apartment. All in all a decent option while staying in Shanghai.
Ryan's place is really charming and the apartment is perfectly situated. We did many walks in the French quarter and enjoyed all the nice shops, bars and restaurants.
Communication with Ryan was perfect and I can definitely recommend his apartment.
I stayed in Ryan's laneway place for 3 nights. Communication from the beginning was thorough and although Ryan couldn't be there to meet me, his assistant was punctual and the whole process was easy. The place itself is very comfortable with lovely personal touches and greenery which made the light-filled place immediately welcoming and authentic. Its location is amazing, very close to the metro which connects to the whole system because of its central proximity. It is really well positioned for great eating options and I was able to dart around
Shanghai with ease making efficient use of the days I had. The added experience of being a part of a local community just for a few days gives you a perspective that would be impossible to replicate in a hotel room. I had the most enjoyable stay in Ryan's place.
Ryan's place offers an authentic old Shanghai experience in the best location in town. Ryan himself has been very friendly and professional, communicative and responsive throughout the process.
We were so happy to stay in Ryan's amazing apartment - it was the perfect base from which to explore Shanghai. Although just off bustling Nanjing Xi Lu, once you step into the longtang, everything quietens right down. The apartment is bright and airy, and a stash of interesting books meant even rainy weather was no problem.
Ryan's instructions for finding the apartment were very comprehensive, and we had no trouble finding the place. Even though he was extremely busy, he had a great recommendation for a restaurant that would cater to us eating cheap veggie food nearby. He was also very easy to contact as he lives below the rented apartment.
Our only gripe was being surprised by the housekeeper letting herself in while we were dressing.
I would recommend Ryan's place to anyone, and hope to stay again sometime in the future. Thanks Ryan.
Ryan's directions were good and we found the apartment very easily. The location was good, near a central subway station, and the room was comfortable. Ryan welcomed us and gave us information about the local area, and recommended a good restaurant for our first evening.
Ryan's place is the ideal base to stay in Shanghai, highly recommend you.
In the back of 南京西路, as if I were far from busy downtown. Laundries hung in loops, people standing chatting, signboards written in exotic character etc. Perfect! Perfect! Perfect! This is where I've always wanted to stay to feel local and why ppl book via Airbnb.
I'm sure it must've cost the owner great efforts to create such a lovely room. Even in the bathroom lit by a small window, there is a swaying fragile plant and it made me feel relaxed at the end of the day.
Ryan is a really nice guy. Polite and friendly. He took me out to lunch showing around. I came to like Shanghai more and more over staying his place. Thank you, Ryan!
We really (really) enjoyed our stay here. The apartment was very comfortable, gloriously funky, and perfectly located. It was the perfect jumping off point to explore the city -- but also a lovely retreat when our jetlag hit in full force and we just wanted to stay in and have a cup of tea. Ryan was a very thoughtful host and we especially appreciated that he came to dinner with us on the first night we were in town. It was fun to get to know him and hear about some of his own Shanghai experiences. We would come back in a heartbeat!
He is very clever and nice guy. I was glad to talk about Shanghai, gardening etc.
