Julio and his wife were great hosts. The bunk beds was very noisy, so when we asked if we could use the other room, they were very gracious and allowed us to do so. Their restaurant is very nice. We ate 2 dinners there and both were very good. They introduced us to Mike, who toured us around the forest for a day, and did a great job. Puerto Jimenez is small and not well equipped for tourists, but very authentic.
The best thing about staying at Giulio's was the food. Because we loved it so much, we ate all our meals there. He has some beautiful, romantic beachfront tables where you can enjoy a platter of exotic fruit and milky coffee for breakfast, tasty salads and rosemary bread for lunch, not to mention spaghetti with seafood in the evening. You can have cocktails, cold beer, crisp white wine or fruity red wine to accompany your candle lit dinner. He has an extensive menu, including the ever popular pizzas but his 'spaguetti del marre' is to die for. All the staff, mainly members of his extended family, are helpful and 'simpatico'.
We had a lovely stay. The location is great. There's WiFi. The room was fine and it was luxury to have an on suite bathroom after sharing a bathroom with 10 others at the last place we stayed! We have fallen in love with the Osa peninsula. It's very special and has become our favourite part of Costa Rica.
Well, Giulio's place is nice enough that I extended my booking for a number of days. Very relaxing, on the water, with a restaurant populated with great staff, the accommodation was a perfect place to decompress. The room is clean and comfortable. Recommend.
If you are thinking about booking this location, I recommend to think twice. We were convinced from the many positive reviews and kind of ignored the few negative ones but it turned out we should have read them more carefully. One review is talking about spending a bit more when sleeping around Corcovado because animals in the room might surprise you otherwise. And that is exactly what happened to us in this room. It turned out we slept in the company of several cockroaches, I counted 10 of them, with one even crawling up my leg inside my sleeping trousers in the middle of the night... There was hole in the wall which probably was the cause of this infestation and might justify the bad experience compared to other guests. Whatever the explanation was, we decided to leave right away after a sleepless night although we had one more night to spend and a trip into the jungle planned. We also asked Giulio for a refund of the last night and although he initially agreed to that he afterwards vanished without honouring his initial commitment. Overall a very unpleasant experience and having walked a bit around in Puerto Jimenez I would say you can definitely find better accommodation with the same budget of 50$ per night.
Giulio's place is right across a path from the water in a remote area of town. The room is clean, comfortable, and it's a small place so there's plenty of privacy. It even has a nice restaurant. Recommend.
We stayed here two nights and it was exactly what we expected. Everyone who worked there was kind and welcoming and helped us whenever we needed it. The food at the restaurant was great too! I would definitely stay there again.
It is a nice place to stay. The restaurant is amazing, we ate every evening there. Guilio it self was really kind, he also lend us his kaiak:-)
Room was simple but clean. It was 97 and humid outside so the little air conditioner worked hard but took the edge off. Host was nice and helped answer questions when we had them. Spoke great English. The window looked out onto a "swamp". About a 7-10 minute walk to the main street with a few simple restaurants and grocery store. Main pier where tour boats departed from was just down the street about a two minute walk. Nice atmosphere at the waterside tables, romantic by candlelight. Only restaurant that had cobblestones in front of it.
Giulio and his family were very friendly and accommodating. His wife, Cecilia, made us feel like almost a part of the family. The music from a nearby bar was very loud and made it hard to sleep but I know the owners cannot control this. Overall it was a very pleasant place to stay across from the beach in Puerto Jimenez.
As mentioned in a previous comment, this accommodation is more suitable for backpackers on a budget. If there's one place in Costa Rica where you should spend the extra money for accommodations, it is definitely in Puerto Jimenez. Spend the extra money. We normally do not like to put negative comments, however you should know that the rooms are behind a restaurant (down a dark and crowded hallway) and are noisy and lack intimacy. Please note that since the restaurant is built on a swamp and there's no window or screen in the bathroom, you can expect some creepy crawlers. We did not feel that the ad reflected reality and we were disappointed. The only positive we were able to find is that the host is kind.
