We stayed one night at Il Giardino. It is a decent place on the beach in the lovely small town of Puerto Jiminez. The host was most helpful (we locked ourselves out of the bathroom). We had breakfast of fruit, toast and beverages at a table right beside the beach. The room was clean, the shower was huge. I awoke early to see if I could take pictures of some of the birds outside but it was too early (the gate was padlocked so I had to wait). I still got awesome pictures including toucans and macaws that were less than 3 blocks away.
Guilio and his family are all very kind and made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed our stay with them. Our room was located behind the restaurant and perched on top of and looked out onto the mangrove. The bed is comfy and the room was clean. The view from our breakfast table, which was right next to the ocean was unbeatable!
We decided not to stay at Giulio's place as we were expecting something different. The room was clean and perfect for backpackers on a budget. The menu of his Italian restaurant out front looked authentic and very appetizing. Giulio was very understanding and graciously refunded us 2 nights stay, even though he had a strict cancellation policy. Giulio is a very kind and generous person. Thank you !
The room was ok but nothing special. But we had a private bathroom so that was ok. We didn't have a view and the A/C made a lot of noise also the tv that was standing next to our door and was playing really loud! Giulio himself was friendly. We went to eat in the restaurant and that was nice.
Giulio, his staff and his family took great care of us. The room was clean, the breakfast was good and the bed was so confortable! Plus, the restaurant is located right in front of the Golfo Dulce, so we always had a nice view. Giulio generously lended us his kayaks so that we could see the dolphins. This experience was amazing.
We had a great time in Puerto Jimenez! The room is basic but it was a great location, so close to the beach and a short walk into town. We rented bikes and explored that way too. Thanks for sharing your rooms with us!
Steps from the warm, still waters of the Golfo Dulce, this hotel and restaurant was just what my girlfriend and I needed after a three-day hike in the Corcovado. They nursed my girlfriend's sore throat as soon as we arrived with hot water and salt, hot chamomile tea with honey and lemon, and copious lime aguas frescas (for small fees). The food is terrific, and after weeks of casados, it was a nice change to have Italian pasta that did not come with gallo pinto, however much I like the quintessential Tico dish. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. And scarlet macaws, capuchins and vultures could be spotted on the property during our one-night stay. All told, a fine place to make your way in or out of Costa Rica's most teeming selva. Word to the wise, if you're leaving this hotel early (or I imagine getting in late), speak to the owners.
We stayed in 2 different rooms while we were there, and ate at their restaurant. The family, including the mother and daughter, are very warm and kind, made us feel welcome and helped with local directions. The casual Italian style of the restaurant is charming, on a pretty spot overlooking the sea, and the food is a nice change from the local Tico style. We found the quality of the food to be pleasant but not special, a bit pricey for the situation, but a fun place to eat and hang out. The rooms are clean and simple with few features, and appropriate for casual travelers and backpackers.
When we attempted to leave at 4am for a tour, we found the front door padlocked and could not get out. We put on our headlamps and looked everywhere in the dark for a second exit and could find none. We had to call the owner to wake him up, who pointed out the location of the keys to get out and told us this should have been explained to us (we had not been told). The biggest worry wasn’t so much the temporary inconvenience, but the idea that if there were a fire, we and others sleeping there would have been in serious danger (breaking through a window in our back room drops you directly into a mangrove swamp, which is neat to look at in the day but probably a risk for crocs). I hope this gets improved, because it’s otherwise a pretty good choice within Puerto Jimenez.
