2.5 stars if we could give half stars. I have listed our pros, then cons below.
My group of thirty-something women rented The Red House for a friends reunion in Austin - we live all over the country, but met in Austin originally, so we were excited to return there together. The Red House was located within a short walk of Vivo, El Chile, El Chilito, and Eastside Cafe, all of which we enjoyed. The house was clean and colorfully decorated with a really cute Austin vibe. Two of the bedrooms comfortably slept two adults each and the third bedroom with a full air mattress was great and surprisingly comfy for one adult. It would also work for two kids or two very cuddly adults.
I do want to comment on a negative interaction we experienced with a neighbor. The lot across the street is empty due to a fire, with a family living on the lot. We had a nice exchange with the grandmother, mother, and child while walking about a block from the house. The father, however, aggressively screamed profanities at one of our group when she (very pregnant) came home alone ahead of the rest of us. He stood up so aggressively that he knocked his chair over behind him and came to the edge of the property, screaming at her. She knew the profanities were directed at her b/c they were very specifically describing her in a vicious way. Once she made it inside, she could still hear the man screaming across the street and through the closed door. My heart truly goes out to this family, but I think it is important for a paying guest to be aware of this. It would be one thing if this was a random incident that the homeowner could not have predicted, but when we initially arrived, the homeowner had left a printed sheet of information about the house, approx. a third of which was devoted to describing the family across the street. The sentence began something to the effect of "Oh yeah, and about the family across the street..." and continued to state that the father had an alcohol problem and may scream at us and to phone the police if we felt threatened. So quite obviously the homeowner is aware of the potential negative situation and I felt that any altercations happening with such regularity for the homeowner to warn us in the letter to phone the police if necessary should be known to renters before deciding this is the place for a getaway for you. It was disconcerting to have spent money on a home when needing to call the police for protection was a very known possibility, but to not be notified ahead of time that this would be the situation.
We loved staying in The Red House!
Before we even traveled down to Austin we were given a package with everything we needed to know about the house, so getting in, connecting to wi-fi and everything else was super simple.
The house itself is great. We loved the area it was in and the decor in the house.
I would definitely try to stay at The Red House again on my next visit to Austin.
Our family had a wonderful time at the Red House during our week long stay in February 2013. The location was easy to get to and there were plenty of street parking. Everything inside the house was ready for us to enjoy our stay: kitchen fully stocked with beautiful dishes and cooking supplies; bathrooms pristinely clean with plenty of towels and an amazing shampoo (i am buying that one for myself). The house is nicely decorated and very comfortable with the a/c to control the temperature; The bedrooms are generously sized and the beds are super comfortable to sleep in; We were 3 adults and 4 kids including a baby. Our older kids slept on the inflatable mattress in the 3rd bedroom and loved it; the baby found the house to be very kid friendly with no stairs, sharp corners or lots of breakable stuff (although we had to hide couple of glass things away). Washer and dryer were totally new very useful with all the detergents provided. The backyard was very nice to hang out in in the afternoon and the playground was right across the street!
Our hostess was very easy to get a hold of and great about answering our questions and helping us to feel very welcome.
In truth the place is much nicer than it looks in the pictures. We would be happy to stay there again and recommend it to everyone.
