I am a young working professional from the UK and Singapore, who currently lives in Shanghai.
We stayed there for more than one month in June.
Great location, just 5 min from the subway with most attraction at 20 min maxi (3 other subway stations are nearby if you prefer to avoid subway interchange). Groceries are also nearby; even if you are looking some western food (we had to kids of 2 and 6 years old to feed). There is also a great choice of restaurants from Chinese (including sichuan cooking) to Greek, Italian or French.
Sarah was really helpful for the everyday life. The flat is quiet and big enough for 4 persons, including kids who need to move when it rains! The cleaning lady and the neighbours were very nice.
Do not expect an immaculate building : it's a traditional chinese housing (our two girls where very happy to see turtles in the neighbour's bathroom). Maybe you will also expect a more immaculate flat, but you won't have the charm and feeling of "old Shanghai"... We definitely recommend Sarah's place.
Great apartment in a great spot. Sarah was helpful and welcoming. Went above and behind to offer advice on a transport issue. Highly recommend.
As other reviewers already mentioned the entrance is a bit disappointing but do not let that put you off. The apartment is really nice with all appliances. It has everything you might need. Just a few minutes walk to Henshan Road subway station. Lots of bars and restaurants in walking distance. Sarah was great before and during our stay. Extremely helpful.
All in all, Sarah's lane house was the perfect place for my family when we visited Shanghai. It was in the heart of French Concession, convenient to all the cool restaurants, bars and local shops, yet it was tugged in the alley, quiet and private. We are a family of 5 including a set of young twins. The rooms were plenty large (especially for Shanghai apt.) and split leveled so it was easy on us to spread my kids. The decor was cozy, tasteful and casual enough to be even kids friendly. The bathroom was clean and updated (although at first we didn't find it and thought the shared public bathroom downstairs was it - imagine the horror we felt initially!!). The shower was easy to use with plenty of hot water and the washer was godsend as it seems I could never keep my kids clean in China, haha. Even though I didn't cook much as we ended up eating out mostly, the kitchen was well equipped. The hot water dispenser sure was great for our instant coffee in the morning :)
One quick advice, as Sarah had mentioned in her apt. description, do not have all 3 heaters on at night as it will overuse the circuit. The first night when we were there it was quite cold and early in the morning the heater stopped working. It was not too fun shivering in the dark for an hr or two...
Sarah was very sweet. She was quick to response with any of our questions and concerns, even met us early next day to make sure all our needs were met. Anyways, we certainly hope to stay at her Lane house again next time when we're in Shanghai.
We had five days in Sarah's lane house at Easter and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was very clean and tidy and the bedrooms are big. The hot water and internet was a bit temperamental sometimes but these are minor quibbles and we had a great experience.
The area is quietly residential but convenient to some great places to eat and the metros are close by.
Sarah and Jason were hands down the most enjoyable guests I've hosted thus far. They were quiet and clean and very respectful of my home. When we did sit down and chat, it was always a stimulating pleasure. I look forward to staying in touch with them and seeing them on my future travels. You simply could not find two sweeter people. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
Sarah is great!
unfortunately I have not had the chance to meet her.
My neighbor told me she was very polite and quiet.
With me communications were excellent.
I would like to come back to me but this time I would like to meet her.
I encourage you to come to Milan during the spring and autumn, that the best way to learn more about Milan.
Sarah has been an excellent guest during her stay
