I like to hike and take walks on the beach.
Teri and Max's home was a dream for my wife, our 10-year-old son, and I. We were familiar with the Abiquiu area already, and both the house and the location were absolutely perfect. We enjoyed the house to the fullest, cooking almost every day, unwinding throughout the house, or in the backyard hot tub, or just breathing in the stars at night, or sharing coffee with the hummingbirds and bees around the purple sage in the morning. The spatial layout is fantastic - loads of room for our son to play music at one end, and my wife and I did our thing at the other end or outside. We swam and kayaked at Abiquiu Lake several times, visited Ghost Ranch probably half a dozen times (we love it there), grabbed immediate needs at Bode's, explored the area extensively - including an aborted trip up Cerro Perdanal (the road was too much even for our otherwise excellent Ford Explorer, and we weren't ready for that hike to the top!). We did have several incredible excursions - camping in Chaco Canyon (unforgettable), drives to Aztec and the road across to Chama, a great visit via the Rio Grande Gorge to Red River (for go-carts, square dancing, and a great local mountain band), and a drive to breathtaking Valle Caldera. It all came back to Teri and Max's home, though. Theirs is a place we'd be thrilled to call home ourselves. Their art, and books, and the unique architecture of the place... I can't say I'm wistful, but I'm rethinking our own home and more... We didn't turn on a tv once (except to just watch a few old movies together), but we did catch up on reading and rethinking our lives in the best ways. Sadly, we only corresponded with Teri and Max by phone and email as they were away when we were there, but Teri's brother greeted us when we arrived, and it all really could not have been any better for us. Space and quiet and mental room to breathe - it was the best couple of weeks we've ever had away together. We can't wait to find the opportunity to return.
We stayed at Teri and Max’s place for 3 weeks with my wife and 2 daughters (7 and 9 yr old), so reviewing our stay thru that lens. Given the house, the location, and the experience the owners offer, we had a great time and highly recommend it.

Owners: Teri and Max are great people. They are kind, responsive, and vested in making sure you have a great stay. We were very grateful for their hospitality.
House: The house itself is beautiful. The entire place including architecture, design, art was really done so well. It was nicely equipped for cooking and comfortable for relaxing. It had everything needed to make a 3 week stay complete. Its greatest feature was the setting with 360 deg. views with the central focus being the view off of the back patio of the lake and multi-colored mountains around Lake Abiquiu. At night, you were greeted to a blanket of stars. This truly is a place where you see galaxies not just stars and one of my best memories of the trip was just sitting on the back porch with my daughters on my lap counting the shooting stars.
Location: The Lake Abiquiu area is a beautiful place. The colors in the mountains combined with the blues off of the lake were something to experience. There were all kinds of fun trails (hiking, biking, jeep). My wife and daughters had a great day of horseback riding on ghost ranch. The house has no lake access, but there was convenient access down the road. There were multiple access points to the Rio Chama on some really great trails (4wd ideal). Other highlights were the Echo Amphitheater, the road to the Christ of the Desert Monastery (more for the drives), and the Rio Chama recreation area right under the dam.
Despite its beauty, one thing that people need to understand is that Lake Abiquiu is about an hour drive from every place you may want to see outside of Lake Abiquiu.. We drove a lot during our stay. the scenery made the drives enjoyable. Española was about 60 min, for errands / groceries, etc. Taos 90 min, Santa Fe and Los Alamos 75 min. It didn’t deter and got visits into Taos, Embudo (for white water rafting), Los Alamos, Bandelier, and many trips to Santa Fe.
We knew the location was remote going into it, so I won’t say this is a criticism. If you are looking for a place with restaurants and shops right out your door, look elsewhere.
In short, Teri and Max are special people with an amazing and very special place. As beautiful as the place is during the day, the blanket of stars the night brings will really impress upon you how lucky you are to be there. I want to thank them both for sharing their beautiful home with our family. Our time there created memories for a lifetime.
The first thing we have to say about this home is that the views are stunning! It did not matter if you were looking out of the front of the house toward Cerro Pedernal or the back of the house looking toward Lake Abiquiu – every view was spectacular. In the afternoons, after sitting in the hot tub to relax, we sat on the back deck enjoying the breeze that seemed to constantly provide a cooling effect. At night, because there is so little ambient light from surrounding cities, the stars seemed so close that you could reach out and touch them.
When we arrived we were pleased to find fresh flowers on the kitchen table and a spotlessly clean home. Because we cooked all our meals in we found the open kitchen to be well equipped, having everything we needed.
We took advantage of the two kayaks the owners left for us to paddle on Abiquiu Lake. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely return again.
Our experience with Teri and Max’s home was absolutely amazing! The house is gorgeous, beautifully decorated, and very unique in its round architecture that gives a breathtaking view of all of the surrounding area. We must say that it is even more beautiful than the pictures. The view from the windows is amazing and constantly changing in the different hours of the day. From the master bedroom we could see Georgia O’Keeffe’s mountain, and for us that was very special.
Upon arrival the house was very clean and welcoming, the layout is convenient, and housed five very comfortably. The house is very homey, very cozy, and the weather was very cold. There was snow on the ground throughout the week we spent there, but the house is nice and warm, and we really enjoyed the warm floors. The open kitchen is very well equipped and a joy to cook in. In a warmer weather we could say it should be a pleasure to sit on the porch and dine on the table outside, right across from Abiquiu Lake.
A big thank you goes to Teri and Max, they are very accommodating and thoughtful. Teri was very responsive throughout the booking, the days before our arrival and during our stay, answering any question we had instantly, and besides, Teri and Max wrote a very detailed “manual” to their house, and lots of great recommendations of things to do in the area.
All in all, we warmly recommend Teri and Max’s lovely home!
Our time at Teri and Max's home was phenomenal on all fronts. The architecture, the land, the tasteful design of the interior, all work together to create a truly energizing and relaxing home environment. As hosts, they couldn't have been more gracious and generous. Our communication was open and easy, and I truly appreciate everything they did to make our stay care-free and comfortable. The photos represent their home perfectly, and I can only say that they give just a glimpse of how expansive and open it is. Everything was immaculately clean when we arrived, and they provided wonderful information about the house and surrounding area. Abiquiu is just a 15 minute drive away for provisions, and if one needs to do a larger grocery stock up, Espanola and Santa Fe are also an easy drive. I can't overstate how perfect the location is - a mesatop nestled between Ghost Ranch and the pine wilderness, with 360 degree views and the Milky Way above. Thank you, Teri and Max!!!
Thank you Sara & Erik for being the perfect guests. We so enjoyed meeting you and sharing our home you! We hope to stay friends into the future.
Excellent location. Beautiful home! The artistic sense of Max and Teri is truly a lived experience while staying at their home. We felt rested and restored. 9 days there was too short. We plan on returning for a month next time. Thank you to Max and Teri for creating such a beautiful place for people to come and find themselves.
Magical! Wake to the rays of the sun slowly transforming the expansive Abiquiu skies through shades of pink, purple, red, and gold. Sip a tea or coffee on the vast patio, and take in the brilliant colors of the hills, reservoir, and canyon cliffs, while hummingbirds buzz and chatter among the flowering plants.
After a fabulous month at Casa Odo’we, we didn’t want to leave. Ever! Everything about the house, the area, and our hosts Teri and Max was marvelous. Where to begin?
The house is spacious, beautiful, and architecturally attractive, with soaring ceilings, warm colors, comfortable, relaxing spaces, incredible views from every room, and delightful art, sculpture, and craftwork tastefully placed throughout. The well-appointed kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, with huge granite countertops and a full range on an island facing a curved wall of windows.
When evening falls, the night sky will emerge and dazzle you with a brilliant, dense display of stars. We were lucky enough to be there during the Perseids, and spent hours taking long exposure night photos as awe-inspiring meteors streaked across the heavens.
Casa Odo’we is situated perfectly for exploring New Mexico. There is wonderful hiking from the house itself, while Abiquiu lake and dam are just minutes away by car, with a wide range of attractions that can be reached during day trips. We explored Abiquiu, Taos, Santa Fe, Ghost Ranch, the Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Bandelier National Park, and much more, and we were only scratching the surface. So many beautiful roads! When we needed to get to Albuquerque, we looked forward to the captivating drive down 96 and the 550.
Finally, Teri and Max are awesome hosts. They’re warm, funny, friendly, flexible, responsive and kind. We were fortunate enough to meet them face to face, and really enjoyed talking to them! Their art mixes painting, sculptural elements, video, and projection in inventive, absorbing works. We felt we could be great friends and hope to see them again.
We suggest that you plan to stay just as long as you possibly can. We can’t wait to return!
My husband and I rented Teri's home for one month, and it was wonderful. We are writers, and we were looking for solitude and quiet, which is what you can expect.
The house itself is spacious, clean, bright, well-appointed, and very comfortable. Great views from every window. You can walk from the house for miles in any direction -- beauty abounds!
Teri is an excellent host; if you are looking for a true retreat, this place is ideal!
Teri and Max were delightful to work with during the rental process. They had a great sense of humor, were understanding and respectful. Our condo is dog friendly and they arranged to bring their babies with them. They left the apartment in great condition and my property management service mentioned that they enjoyed working with them as well. Teri and Max were great guests and they are welcome back anytime.
