We had a great time staying in the Surf House. The location was amazing, Andy was quick to respond to our questions, and his food truck suggestions were perfect. We were there during an unusually humid time and we missed having AC but the numerous fans were helpful. There were plenty of beach and bathroom towels and the washer and dryer was great to have as well.
All of the beach gear was really convenient and great to have. It is all gifted from previous guests and not all of the snorkeling gear worked super well. I suggest buying a $10 set from the nearby Foodland and getting into the aloha spirit by leaving it behind when you check out.
Andy was extremely quick with responses from the point of inquiry to questions I had after booking the unit. He provided a VERY detailed list of places to visit, eat, and activities in the area. He was very pleasant when I spoke with him.
The house could not have been located in a better location for the North Shore! It was a two minute walk across the street to Sharks Cove for snorkeling and a 5 minute drive to Waimea and Sunset, with Foodland right down the street. The house was stocked with plenty of beach towels, snorkeling gear, boogie boards, coolers and sand toys for the kids. It was great to come back after a day out and be able to rinse off in the outdoor shower and throw a load of towels and clothes in the washer and dryer. The house is spacious and has a very open feel to it.
There were, however, several things I was a disappointed with. The pictures on Airbnb were taken with a wide scope lens creating the illusion of a larger and brighter space. The wifi was intermittent and couldn't be reset until the people in the unit upstairs returned (router was in their unit). The couches and dining room table were not those shown in the ad. The couch was old and saggy - felt a bit like an old motel couch. The bedroom furniture in the green and yellow room, and the bedding (yet soft and comfortable) in every room was different than that shown in the ad. The house had a very "damp/dingy" feel to it, along with an unpleasant mildew smell which, without fail, caused breathing irritability with my youngest who has asthma, by day 2. The lower portion of the wall adjacent to the bathroom shower was soggy due to poor water containment. There were several loose tiles in the kitchen that would come up when walking across them, the bathroom was missing a cabinet door on the sink closet, and there was a window pane missing in the back room so I was unable to lock up completely when leaving for the day. While the gazebo was nice, again it did not have the fabric cover displayed in the photos online. We were looking forward to spending time outside rain or shine, and this was not an option given the lack of cover. And lastly, the driveway and covered area where the washer and dryer are had a very strong stench of cat and/or dog feces. It seemed apparent that there was a lack in pride of ownership and/or an inability to keep up the property.
For $275/night I feel that these issues should have been addressed and remedied prior to our arrival. Had these issues not been addressed there should have been greater transparency to allow us to have made a more informed decision on whether we wanted to stay here.
All contact was made by email but information given was accurate.
If there was a problem Andy promptly replied.
The neighbourhood was much better than expected.
The bus service was excellent.
Extremely close to shops and eating places.
The apartment was compact and had very clean facilities.
Andy, thank you so much!! Every detail was perfect for things to do. We stayed 3 nights 4 days and we jammed packed everything in our first vacation ever. Simply the best place to stay. No regrets period. Morning walk to the grocery store In this lil town was perfect for a getaway holding hands looking out to a amazing view. There where six of us in total and spent a lil over $450 to pack the fridge and have meals after every outing we had. Great deal for a big family that easily costs us $80 just for one meal. Great for families on a budget and who doesn't mind cooking quick meals on vacation.
The butcher cut us frozen riblets bone out and we marinated it with soy yay island teriyaki while out came back placed on store bought cookie sheets on broil. Streamed some rice and we were set.
Must try the fruit stand it's amazing mango and powder or mixed fruit if your adventurous. Must sit on the sand with sun setting. Bring your trial size bug spay we got pegged at night at the secret beach but oh so worth it. I almost didn't even want to write anything about this place because I want it to have the least access to people for my own selfish reasons haha
Andy was a great host! He left a very detailed message with great places to check out, food recommendations, and so much more. He really reached out to make sure our stay was as best as it could get.
There were a few problems with the house though. Unfortunately the couches in the living area and the kitchen table were different than what was shown in the pictures. The worst part was that there were termites in the house. We would feel dust that felt similar to sand on the wood floors, and we realized it was wood dust. We notified Andy, and he told us that the house was fumigated earlier in the year and that termites are a huge problem on the North Shore.
Other than that, everything was great. It was awesome to walk across the Kam Hwy to go snorkeling at Shark's Cove every morning. I would recommend staying here.
We really enjoyed staying in Andys house - perfectly located close to Sharks Cove and Foodmart.
Me and my husband really enjoy our holidays at Andy's place in the North shore. Very simple but with all you need, especially if you plan to spend most of the day out. Andy was very helpful sending us several advices and messages to see if we needed anything. Very nice experience!
We had an awesome time at this place. Perfect location to explore the beaches of the North Shore and to enjoy the many food trucks in the area. The house was clean, spacious and nicely decorated. Even beach equipment was provided, so you can leave your cooler and chairs at home. Sharks Cove across the street offers great snorkeling and tide pools with many fish, and some of the most famous surf spots are just a few min by car. Andy was a great host and provided us with many recommendations on where to go and was always available to share local insights. Thank you!
Andy was a great host and quick to respond to our request. He offered detailed checkin/out procedures along with insightful recommendations about the area.
The place was exactly as in the pictures and located in a nice, quiet/relaxing neighborhood. We really enjoyed the convenience of the kitchen, especially after picking up our daily supply of poke from the Foodland around the corner. Even better, I was able to walk down to Sharks cove or Waimea bay in less than 10 minutes daily. Looking forward to the next time I can stay at Andy's.
Andy had great detailed recommendations during our stay. We stayed at the pad for 4 days and had a great time. We only needed a space to sleep at night as we spent most of our time exploring so it was a perfect place for us. For the price and location, it was well worth it. We were in walking distance to the beach, food trucks and store and only a short 10-15 minutes to a lot of the hotspots in North shore. Andy also had some beach equipment that we could borrow and a washer and dryer which came in handy.
Andy was a fantastic guest, super easy to work with, and very clean and considerate of the space. Would def recommend!
