Giovanna was extremely helpful. We had not visited Merida before and to have someone familiar with the place give us a few hints was perfect. Now onto the house - WOW! They have done such a beautiful job renovating and the whole play is very modern and clean. The house actually made our trip to Merida very enjoyable. We swam in the pool, relaxed in the hammock, chilled to music and were able to get places very easily. Anyone who is visiting Merida should stay in this house! It is perfect! Loved every minute.
Thanks you ever so much Giovanna for letting us stay in your magnificent place. You can probably see from the photos how beautiful the house is, and it would be hard pressed to find a more impressive place to stay on airbnb. Giovanna herself was a fabulous host: kind, considerate, responsive and full of useful information on all things Merida, thanks again!
Just got back from spending 4 nights at Giovanna's house in Merida. Her home and gardens are truly spectacular and much larger than you would think.
The house itself is unusual for my neck of the woods, the northeast of the US, but in Merida, it may be quite common. The house is set behind a nondescript wall on a quiet side street about 8 blocks, 15 minute walk, to the main plaza. There is parking and a very private front garden. Once through the gates, the home is a wonder of beauty, delight, and whimsy.
Upon entering the front door, the view of the inside of the home is breathtaking. Open plan, impossibly high ceilings, floor to ceiling walls of glass, dramatic lighting, ceiling fans, lots of comfy seating options, very well equipped kitchen, all with a gorgeous view of front and rear gardens. Giovanna's beautiful design sense is evident throughout.
Additionally, the master bedroom and the stunning master bath are in this part of the house.
The second bedroom and bath are accessed by going through one of the 3 glass doors from the living room or kitchen out to the rear garden. The bedroom is to the left and the bathroom to the right. Neither room has interior access so you may want to keep this in mind if you are traveling with small children or those afraid of the dark as you must leave the bedroom and walk through the garden to get to the bathroom. I chose to sleep in the outer bedroom and loved sleeping to the sounds of the hooting owls. The bathroom is small but has a wonderful shower, with rain head and vessel sink. Bedroom is very comfy with a lovely view of the garden.
The rear garden is positively massive and has a large pool, numerous seating and dining areas, stone walls, plenty of room to meander, all with complete and total privacy.
Merida is a wonderful city in a state of graceful decay. On every block, the diversity of homes runs from new renovations to crumbling ruins and Giovanna's street is no exception. However, the city is remarkably safe and we never felt uneasy walking everywhere, coming and going, at all hours of the night. Merida is very laid back and friendly and not once did I experience or witness any aggression of any kind. Very refreshing for someone coming from the cold brutality of the North East of the US.
Giovanna is a perfect host and it was an honor to be trusted to be steward of her home for a few days. Her recommendations for dining, drinking, and experiencing the alegría de la vida that is Merida, were spot on and you would be wise to follow her suggestions as she has the knowledge only locals have. We were never steered wrong and have her to thank for some of our fondest memories of the city. She was always gracious and helpful whenever I had questions.
Giovanna's place was a modern oasis. The living room sofa was super comfortable and the kitchen had doors that opened out into the patio. The shower was amazing and the place is much more open than the photos show. A couple notes: one of the bedrooms and bath have exterior entrances (from the back patio) and that the master bedroom and bath do not have a door. It would be a very romantic place for a couple though and if you're ok with the 2nd bedroom it was large enough for 3 people. We really loved the coffee she provided and the location was close to the taxi cabs and within walking distance. We enjoyed having a parking space and felt safe in that location. We loved it!
We (a grown up family of four) stayed here over the New Year and loved it. The property is a convenient ten minutes walk away from central Merida yet has its own parking. From the nondescript outside you'd never guess the stylish interior. This is a beautiful place to stay and relax. I wish we'd had more time to make use of the gorgeous, quite sizeable pool and even just to sit around in the garden. The place is very spacious and we found no problem with the semi-open design. Giovanna went out of her way to make the place ready for our arrival and to welcome us when we finally did. On arrival she was helpful with places to visit and restaurants and street stalls to try out and generally very responsive to queries during our stay. We'd certainly return.
Great house near the historical center
Marvellous garden with a huge pool to cool down a little bit after a day of strolling
Giovanna was really understanding and helpful.
Giovanna's house is amazing, dreamy, original, artistic & convenient. Her sense of style seemlessly mixes the classical & the contemporary. I want to return ASAP to see Merida & the Yucatan thru her eyes. The house is well situated in the handsome historic district. You can walk to the town center, easily shop for food, and even stroll over in the early morning to the public outdoor salsa class in the plaza. Her luscious garden is a delight. At night you will not want to get out of her moonlit pool.
Our trip to Merida was unbelievable thanks to Giovanna - her beautiful home and large private garden with pool made our trip.
What an absolutely beautiful hideaway. One cannot even imagine what is beyond the blue door and high gates surrounding this luxurious villa. Meticulously designed, incredibly homely and the perfect place to relax. I loved the pool, the high ceilings, the little treats and browsing the beautiful trinkets and art Giovana has around the house. Very smooth check in process - thanks Marco! And thank you Giovana - great place that is highly highly recommended.
Response from Giovanna:
