This place is amazing! It was the perfect respite for my parents, husband, and I. We got to Big Island early the first day and Daniel let us in immediately. His flexibility in this relived a lot of stress for me. There were beautiful fresh flowers in all of the rooms. The beds were ridiculously comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed. The bathrooms were clean and stocked with toiletries. The neighbors were kind and full of useful information. We spent the last morning at a hot spring nearby. Everyone in our group was happy and comfortable. I couldn't have asked for better. I had to drag myself away and would stay here again in an instant. This is truly a gem in paradise.
The house is very beautiful and spacious (there were 5 of us and we managed to not constantly stumble upon each other!), exactly as on the pictures. We stayed there 6 nights, and travelled all around the Big Island from this point. Hilo is only 20 min away driving, Volcano National Park is 30-40 min. You can walk to the rocky shoreline (no swimming there, just enjoying sunrise and waves) in 10 min. Also, plus of the location -- you are in the village, behind you a jungle, and only sounds you might hear are of exotic birds and.. roosters.
There were only couple cons:
- There are 3 mattresses as mentioned in the description, but there are no pumps to pump them.. There are two queen beds, but they are not enough for 5 people, and the couch is quite small/narrow for average adult (my dad had to sleep there, and he is very thin). So if you are looking to use the air mattresses, you have to bring your own pump.
- The bed sheets are on the beds only, no extras. So one of us had to sleep in the sleeping bag (which was not comfortable at all).
Daniel was a great host. Was very prompt with the reservation and had the keys ready for us to occupy his home ahead of time. He was even friendly enough to give us some great reccommendations of "under the radar" sites to see in the area. Overall a great trip and great experience with Daniel.
We were very pleased to stay in Daniel's house first of all because it was clean, very spacious, we felt like in our own home. Everything was as described and all questions answered by Daniel. The neighborhood was very quiet and pleasant. The only thing that was unexpected - and it wasn't at all Daniel's fault - was the power outage the first night; but we had candles and matches left by the host on a night table. If it hadn't been so far from the mainland, we would have visited the place again. We feel sorry for the people who lost their houses due to the volcano activity, and pray that this wouldn't happen to Daniel.
Daniel, thanks for being so accommodating and always being available to answer questions. We had a great time in your home. It was very convenient to have a kitchen, and the layout was perfect for our family. Thanks so much!
The home was beautiful and spacious, exactly what we were looking for. It was a little far from town, but we knew this and were looking forward to the quiet, it just might not work for someone who wants to be super close to everything. Daniel responded quickly to all my questions and called to check on on us. Overall a very lovely experience!
A great place like Daniel's house deserves a all 5-star recommendation! I recently had a family vacation (group of 4) to the big island & spent 4 days on the east side of the island. I had several issues with a few initial bookings and finally I found Daniel's house at last minute. I was a bit hesitant in the beginning based on only 1 existing review, but our experience was so great that I felt very lucky to have chosen to stay there.
As the island is indeed big and our itinerary was a bit tight, location was very important to us. Daniel's house was in a great spot - a beautiful bungalow located on a quiet street with reasonable driving distance to all attractions we explored (i.e. the volcano national park, Puna beaches & Hilo town). It's a fully functional house so we truly felt just like home. Both bedrooms were spacious with comfortable beds. The kitchen was equipped with everything we could ask for so we could make breakfast or heat up leftover food; In fact, if you are staying longer, it'll be even better - there is a full rack of different spices for any creative chef. We loved everything there - mom was happy to have the kettle for her morning tea and laundry facilities for everybody's wet clothes ; dad enjoyed his 2-block morning walk to the breathtaking shoreline as well as the king-size bed and the hammock chair for his recharging process, my boyfriend & I spent great deal of time reading Daniel's books at night and learnt a lot about the history and changes happened on the island. That copy of i memory.
Daniel's home was in a perfect location for our stay. Close everything we wanted, beach, thermal spas, farmer's market, community pool, everything. There was a problem with the refrigerator upon our arrival and a new fridge was delivered the following morning. The house was well equipped with everything we needed. The neighborhood and people were amazing and friendly. We felt at home.
It was an amazing 51 year anniversary trip. We will be back! Thank you Daniel!
