The host Andrés was very welcoming by email (he was in New York) and very gracious in his communications. When we had questions or problems, he was fast and attentive in trying to help. He seems like a owner who cares about the comfort of his guests.
The location of the house in the historic area is perfect and is why you are paying a relatively high price. It's a short walk to everything and the house has a view of the water from the second and third floors. The building itself has a good layout and feels comfortable even while its finish is minimal and unpolished. There are few nice unexpected extras like a music player with some CD's and a dvd player. The kitchen is very basic and is not suited to preparing anything but simple meals. Given that, it should have a microwave oven so that guests can reheat take-out food. The building and furnishings show a number of deferred maintenance items (some furniture is broken, the master toilet has a funky flush mechanism, the towel rack in the master bath fell off the wall (it needs new wall anchors) the living room AC didn't work although the bedroom one did etc.) The house feels very well used by a lot of people.
Bottom line: we would stay here again.
Our stay at Andres beautiful home was truly exceptional. Meeting Andres himself was a great welcome to Uruguay and he gave us a thorough tour of his place before leaving. During our stay, we actually found ourselves wishing he had been there for a night just to get to know him better.
The house itself is stunning. Set in lovely pastoral environs with personal details that really make it a unique experience. Walking paths surround the home and a great swimming pool allow for watching the sunsets and passing the time.
We spent the days in and out of Colonia, but it the relaxing evenings on the porch watching the sunset, with a great meal, prepared in his stellar kitchen, were what we enjoyed most.
It is not a question of would we go back, it is a question of how soon can we.
Andrés was there to meet us, even though he had to wait for a while due to long lines at the Thrifty car rental counter in the Buquebus terminal. The house is exactly as pictured. It has a fantastic location just next to the Tourism Office at the entrance to the old city.
The house is perfectly located in the historic center and has a very pleasant common room with an incredible view on the delta (and its sunsets !). The terrace and garden are great spots too. Andrés was a nice and flexible host. Went to pick us up and droped us to the terminal. He welcomed us with lots of fruits and basics stuff in the fridge. Et il parle français !
We had a really wonderful stay here. I've been to Colonia many times and I can't think of a better place to stay in order to enjoy the city. The location is unbeatable (half a block from the "barrio histórico" on a tree-lined street, two blocks from the main street where shops can be found, one block from the river), and the house is both practical and charming. One of Colonia's main attractions are the sunsets over the river and the incoming storms during the summer. Andrés' place has a unique rooftop from where to enjoy both of these. I wouldn't hesitate recommending the place to anyone that wants to discover the beauty of an Uruguayan afternoon.
Andres was my first paying guest ever, through Äirbnb or otherwise. He and Maria turned out to be very easy going, also if not everything works out as expected. Also they kept the place very tidy & took care of everything, such as the plants on the roof top terrace. Ideal guests with a strong network. It turne4d out we had a communual friend in Amsterdam, while Andres & Maria are from Venezuela. We ended all up in a nice canal trip in my small boat. I suppose this is what Airbnb is about: share your place, use other places for travel and make new friends. I thinks my first Airbnb guests ticked the boxes extraordinally well. It was a pleasure!
Excellent guest, it is always a pleasure to host Andres! Gracias
Paola & Isak
