We are a couple and a cat. I work at the University of Canterbury in the College of Arts, Ryan works at home. The cat makes sure the FURniture stays that way.
My communication with the host was quick enough, and we were glad to find the Anna and Ryan home when my wife and I arrived. The room is as described: small, comfy bed, and fit our needs. I found Anna and Ryan to be kind. The house was a bit chaotic, but we did stay the night after Christmas so it didn't bother us. The location is convenient and we stopped at the grocery store (New World) just around the block.
I spent 3 nights at Anna-Maria in Christchurch.
The place: This is a cute small house in a quiet neighborhood. There are several restaurants and supermarkets at walking distance. There is a bus stop close to the house. The house has a yard and a cat. There is one bathroom that you'd be sharing with the hosts. The room is small and the bed comfortable. The living room is messy and so is the kitchen. The bathroom was clean. You are a couple of miles away from downtown. The neighborhood is safe.
The hosts: Anna-Maria never replied to my emails to confirm the stay. I found her communication a bit poor. You are renting a room and that is what you'll get. I did not find Anna-Maria or Ryan particularly friendly. I was never offered a cup of tea or to sit down to chat. Several times I tried to engage a conversation with Anna-Maria and although she talked quite a bit about her work, she never asked me how was my day or anything alike. Ryan never talked to me, said hello or acknowledged my presence. Neither of them ever referred to me by my first name and to this day, I have doubts that they even knew it. It is not the most welcoming experience that I have had in Airbnb. When I arrived, I found the cat on my bed. The cat seems to have some kind of skin rash. I love pets, but I am not the kind of person that allows pets on beds. Anna-Maria did help when I asked if I could borrow some DVD's. Ryan and Anna-Maria weren't rude but not friendly either. If you are ok with feeling like a ghost, then you'll be fine with this place. It took a while to get a key to the place and I had to ask for it several times. It could have been that they were respecting my privacy but It felt a bit more than that. Maybe they were having some problems. The whole house atmosphere felt a bit weird.
Unfortunately, this is my first and only bad experience with Airbnb, I'd definitely not stay here again just because I like a bit more human interaction, not just a business transaction. At least the place is cheap.
Friendly and respectful hosts. The room is cosy and warm. I enjoyed sharing their home and their company. Would recommend them for a short stop in Christchurch or a longer term option.
I found Anna-Maria and Ryan to be such wonderful hosts. My stay was comfortable and I would definitely not hesitate to stay if I was ever in Christchurch and looking for airbnb accom again.
I went to Christchurch to visti a friend for 3 nights so I spent very few moments with Anna Maria but I had a great time. The room is a single room in an area near the center,it was warm despite the cold weather.I noticed very near a big super market,a coffee shop that I didn't actually visited. The bus is also near, overall for a quick and economic visti to Christchurch it's a great room!!!
Despite my spontaneous demand for a room in Christchurch, I got a very fast answer. I really enjoyed my stay at Anna-Marias place.
Anna-Maria and Ryan were great hosts. They were very friendly and made my stay comfortable and fun. The lifts to university in the morning were fantastically convenient too!
Communication was excellent.
The room itself comprised a single bed with a TV (which I didn't use) and plenty of clothes hanging space.
The house was cold - but it was the middle of winter! The bed was warm and comfortable however.
Anna-Maria and Ryan are a nice couple. Ryan is a fantastic comic artist.
The room was exactly what I needed - a place to sleep at the end of the day having walked and bused Chch and at the price I have no complaints.
