I currently live in New York, where I'm a Visiting Researcher at the City University of New York. I'm an academic working in the criminology department at Leiden University. When I'm not working I enjoy reading, walking and cycling (particularly in cities - it's my background in urban sociology), and listening to and discovering new music.
My first travel with Airbnb was in 2012 to San Francisco when I visited the Stanford Law School for work, last time was in 2015 for work as well, two weeks in Sheffield. Airbnb for me is perfect for work travels: I like staying in a place that feels a bit like home, where I can cook and relax after work.
Whenever I visit a place, whether for work or holiday, I like to explore on foot or by bicycle, avoid tourist magnets and try to get a feel for the everyday life. Airbnb is perfect for this purpose! I haven't hosted via Airbnb but I've had guests via CouchSurfing (and surfed myself) and I've really enjoyed meeting new people and making people feel welcome, at home and comfortable in your own home.
