I'm a self-employed public relations professional and former long-time journalist. I'm an East Coast, Jersey Girl, who has adapted well to the Southern California sunshine and lifestyle. I love to travel and experience a city/community from the point of view of the people who live there. I've had the great fortune of working in professions that allowed me to travel just enough. I always try to find at least a little time during a work trip to explore a new city or area. I don't mind traveling alone. I try to alternate my big vacations, taking one in the US and the next abroad. I'm spending a lot of time in Guatemala right now for personal reasons and just love the beautfy of that county and its people. In Guatemala, as in other destinations, I try to take advantage of my local connections and contacts who offer to act as tour guide, translator and even driver.
Of all the places I've traveled in the world, Peaks Island and Portland, Maine hold a special place in my heart. My grandparents lived in Portland and one of my grandmothers owned a ramshackle cottage on Peaks where I loved to spend time with her and family during the summer. Even now, as a middle-aged adult, butterflies fill my stomach and I want to jump over the railing as the ferry pulls up to the dock to deliver me to Peaks Island. There's nothing like Maine in the summer!
A more exotic destination that I am so glad I visited was Limbe, Cameroon, a coastal village where my sister was running a program to rescue and care for orphaned, abused and ill primates.
When I travel, the things I want are a comfy bed in a quiet and safe setting, a bathroom with running water (I've been places where this was a luxury), and access to good coffee in the morning. I don't need my days planned down to the hour and minute. But I do need some alone time.
