Wonderful host, beautiful house, fun neighborhood... If we return to New Orleans we are definitely checking this place out again! There was more than enough room for our group of 5.
The positives of the place-
•walking distance to Frenchman St and other areas
•the place is huge for typical NOLA rentals.
•the apartment and building are not very well maintained. The apartment itself is not as bright and clean as the pictures indicate- with numerous newspapers and comics covering holes in the walls
•toilet feels like it wills soon fall through the floor due to rotted floor boards, hopefully not with someone on it during a show in the lounge below
•one bedroom had dog feces in corner
•One bedroom did not have clean sheets but instead had holes, hair and droppings in them.
•Sofa sleeper had mouse droppings
•Floor had not been swept as there were matches and loose change (that may be a plus?)
We did not get the same feeling of how wonderful the host is as when we went to check in, she was on vacation and the other bar manager did not know we were coming.
Overall- for the price she charges the space should be kept up better. Whole feel of the building is one of neglect/run down/don’t care attitude. Would not recommend it except for a frat hangout. This is not our first time in NOLA. We have experience and saw other rentals which are much better maintained.
Cool place. Not a lot of unnecessary furniture and easy to keep clean. Takes about 10-15 minutes to get to Bourbon St. / Royal St, and takes another 10-15 to get to Harrah's and Canal St. Shower pressure is a little low and the towels did not smell very good, but besides that pretty good experience! Zalia is very easy going and a good communicator, which is always a plus!
Our stay was great and totally what we expected! the bands downstairs were amazing and that just added to our mardi gras experience. Its a late night establishment but we knew that soo for our group is was just fine and we also loved the neighbourhood, we would totally stay there again!! thank you Zalia!
We stayed at Zalias place in Feb of 2014. The place was just as advertised and we fit our group comfortably. Its a short walk to Frenchman and also walkable to Bourbon (15 mins or so). As some other reviewers also said the couch is a little rough, so bring an air mattress if you're planning to us it. Zalia is a great host and provided us with everything we needed.
No fuss, great experience. Other reviewers and the description are accurate. Fun neighborhood and very walkable to many attractions in New Orleans. We were comfortable with 8 people and enjoyed our experience.
Zalia's place was exactly as described - no 5 star hotel, but definitely full of New Orleans charm. She was incredibly flexible with letting us check in early. As we were driving, our check-in time was up in the air and we ended up arriving super early in the morning (we also forgot about the time difference). There was some beer and wine in the fridge and the place was clean.
Probably my only complaint was that we had wanted to use the pull out sofa (3 couples in our party), and although Zalia left extra blankets and sheets, when we pulled out the sofa, the mattress was dirty and looked like something had been spilled on it and there was crumbs/dirt all over it. The mattress was also probably about 20 years old and you could feel the springs through it. We ended up rotating rooms so no one had the twin beds more than once (they were very comfy), which was fine since we were usually quite inebriated by the time we got back to the apartment, but if you plan on using the pull out sofa, you might want to bring an air mattress instead. Might also benefit from a microwave/toaster.
Other than that, it was great. Definitely noisy, as was expected since it's right above a bar in an old building, so I wouldn't stay there if you're looking for peace and quiet. The music usually stopped around 1:30 in the morning. No one tried coming up on the balcony or porch. The place was super close to everything - about a 5-10 minute walk to Frenchman St scene and about 10-15 minute walk to the Quarter depending on how fast you walk. We typically called a cab at night to bring us to the Quarter (we were lazy) but Dan at United Cabs always came pretty quickly and we could text him.
Overall, great little place for a group at a great price!
We had a great stay. All of the other reviews seem pretty accurate. The place was perfect for our needs. We had 5 guys there for a wedding and needed a place where we wouldn't have to worry about noise and wanted something with more of a house feel than hotel. It was also much cheaper than a stay at a hotel. The 4 beds and pull out couch fit 5 men comfortably.
For the most part we didn't get back at night until the bar had already closed so the noise below wasn't an issue. On the first night we were able to get a few drinks at the bar. The bartender was friendly and very helpful with explaining the area and things we should check out. The atmosphere was neat. We would've liked to spend more time at the bar downstairs and catch a show or two but had too many things already planned.
Cabs to nearby hot spots were cheap (about $10 each way), but there was also parking for our rental car. The area seemed safe, we had no issues. Zalia was a great host and the staff downstairs friendly. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a similar experience.
I only have positives to say about this experience. Zalia was extremely accommodating. We got in really late on our first night but everything was set up perfectly for us and the keys were waiting. We ended up staying an extra night at the last minute and it was no problem. The apartment itself was truly fantastic and everything we needed. We randomly ran into some friends that were locals and when we told them where we were staying they said it was the best, and it was! So close to everything (including a great coffee shop) and the vibe of the place is so perfectly NOLA (especially with that magnificent deck). In fact we ended up staying the extra night just because of how perfect this place was. Thank you so much Zalia, we could not have asked for a better host.
Zalia is a GREAT host, and we had a blast at the house! If you want a quiet house away from it all, this place isn't for you. But, if you're like us and want to be able to walk to Frenchmen and the Quarter and be in a part of town with a lot of character in a fun, old house - this place is right up your alley. We had two couples and two single people, so the double bed and twin bed situation was great. Under the house, the Allways Lounge is a nice spot to hang out at night, as are a few other bars in the neighborhood. Thanks Zalia for a memorable weekend!!! We look forward to visiting again soon.
