We (Nancy and Jon) live in a sustainable, energy-efficient home in the heart of Boerne, TX. Jon is the architect. I teach college English and Spanish. Our home was featured in 2013 as the Best Retirement Home in Fine Homebuilding magazine's national Design Awards. We are both proponents of the responsible use of nature's resources, and we both love working and being in nature. I think the sharing economy is terrific, and I recently attended an airbnb host conference to learn more about it.
The apartment for rent is self-contained and is across the courtyard from our home, with its own entrance. We moved to Boerne 5 years ago from New England, although I grew up in San Antonio. We lived in the apartment while our home was being finished, so it has everything necessary for a longer stay. We like the fact that our home is walking distance to a variety of shops and restaurants in town. Our favorite is the Dodging Duck Brewhouse (open 7 days/wk.), but we also love the Bear Moon Bakery (breakfasts and lunch), the Boerne Wine Bar, the Peach Cafe, the Cypress Grill and the Creek Restaurant--all 10 minutes walking past the creeks in town. A large grocery store (HEB) is 1 mile away. We enjoy our eclectic neighborhood, which is slowly becoming gentrified, but for now there are chickens wandering freely and deer grazing along the creek behind the house. It's truly country in the city!
For outings, there's Lost Maples (1 hour) and Guadalupe River State Parks (20 min.), Fredericksburg (45 min.) and Enchanted Rock 1 hour away. Boerne City Lake offers swimming in the summer. Only 12 miles from here is Comfort, with it's well-preserved downtown and the beautiful Bending Branch winery. Boerne itself boasts a well-known nature center, hike and bike trails, Second Saturday arts, crafts, and gallery hopping, and numerous other points of interest, which we will be glad to let you know about if you're interested. See the GUIDEBOOK for recommended restaurants.
