The best thing about traveling is meeting new people. It is interesting how different cultures view the world. It's illuminating to get to share in these differences and to expand my mind as a result. Plus, cultural differences aside, we’re all unique individuals. Hopefully those I meet get something out of the experience too.
The way cities work fascinates me, so I often will skip the tourist attractions and just wander around to see how people get to work, relax, or shop. It's almost always something unexpected and not highlighted on the map that makes the best memories of a trip.
I’m fairly new to traveling to countries where I don’t speak the local language. It is still a bit of a challenge but have found most people are quite nice and it’s amazing sometimes how much can be communicated without words. This is good because I’m sure my very limited Spanish is more useful for humorous entertainment of native speakers than anything else. Living in a tourist area, now I know what it’s like to be on the other side of a conversation when a non-English speaker asks me for directions or local advice.
