Ruth is a wonderful host who made my stay in Qingdao very rewarding. Her apartment's in the inner west of Qingdao, in a big secure complex, and guests have a bedroom and bathroom on the lower floor to themselves. Ruth's a very attentive host, ready to go to great lengths to make sure that her guests get to see not just the standard sights but any points of particular interest to them. On my first night, I mentioned that I was a keen hiker and Ruth's husband - fluent in English, like Ruth - arranged for a hiking friend to take Ruth and me on a long hike around Lao Shan the next day. Ruth also drove me to parts of the city i was interested in and gave me clear instructions on how to get back by bus or cab. I should add that I ate with the family most nights during my stay, which was a great experience. To sum up, even if you are new to travel in China and hesitant about straying from the safety of the big tourist hotels, Ruth's apartment is a garage and rewarding alternative. It's a no-brainer for any seasoned China traveller.
What a welcoming reception we got, and warm, friendly hosting throughout our Qingdao stay. Ruth has great English as a business lady; Husband Sean is an English Major college administrator. Very effective combination for helping us with any and all typical or special traveler logistics.
The accommodations were very home-like. We had own entrance and key to the full-floor space, all of which had plenty of natural light, despite being a half floor below ground. Well-appointed room with great a/c; private bathroom. We had the run of the kitchen and took advantage of cooking at home, plus enjoyed the cappuccino machine, tea and access to the laundry machine.
This lovely residential dwelling is connected easily by buses, literally from the end of their driveway, or around the corner, in all directions (metro system under construction). 15 minutes to most key destinations (just avoid the rush hour): 2008 Olympic sailing harbor, the business district, the shopping districts , the beaches. And, only a few minutes from home are: curious and fun farmers market (which includes ready to eat BBQ quail eggs, roast duck, fried fish and fresh Tsingtao beer!), just next to a multi-floor supermarket/department store.
We stayed for 2 weeks, and felt like we left family.
