Unfortunately, some unexpected construction work in Melissa's house meant that we were not able to stay at her place. Nonetheless, Melissa showed that she was a great host - she let us know of this unexpected problem in plenty of time before our stay, assured us that she would arrange alternative accommodation, and kept in regular contact.
Melissa consequently arranged alternative accommodation for us via Airbnb and provided all the relevant details, so we had nothing to worry about. There was nothing more she could have done to make it easier for us, so although I can't review Melissa's house, we were very happy with her hosting skills.
The reservation was canceled the day before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Overall, I was not pleased with my stay at Melissa's. This is mostly because the place had fleas, which we unfortunately discovered a bit too late, and left with many bites. It definitely put a damper on the vacation I was taking with my boyfriend. Melissa did seem genuinely upset when I explained this, and she gave us one night's refund. Had the place not been infested, my review would have been better.
There was also a problem with the key. It would sometimes take us 10 minutes just to lock or unlock the door, which was a hassle.
Aside from the above, the place is in a really great location, well decorated, and Melissa was easy to communicate with. I don't hold our experience against her, but in short, I did not have a pleasant stay.
Melissa was very easy to communicate with prior to our stay. She answered a lot of questions that we had in planning, and then made herself available while we were there; however, we didn't need to contact her because she left detailed info at the house. House on a Hill is an old home, but it's clean, decorated nicely, and was very comfortable. It's a great location, safe and close to downtown, shopping, and the trail around the lake. The fridge was a little loud (it's old and runs almost constantly), and is close to the bedroom, so this could be an issue for a light sleeper. Otherwise, this is a great place to stay in Austin and we would be happy to return!
I had a very comfortable stay here. It was very clean and spacious. The house was a bit older than I was expecting. But it was great and suited my needs perfectly.
A great stay again! :)
Melissa was a fantastic host and her apartment is perfectly charming. It's spacious, very well kept, walking distance to tons of great spots, and quite easy to park. She had all the best suggestions of things to do and see in the area and was very responsive.
My husband and I enjoyed staying at Melissa's house on a hill. The location can not be beat. Walkable to a few bars and some great restaurants (Counter Cafe, 24 Diner, and Fresia's were our favorites). Whole foods was as other reviewers said, amazingly huge and super close. It was so nice to have a cup of coffee or tea in the apartment. Parking and key pick up is really easy. Melissa is very responsive to email and available during your stay for questions.
We had a great experience at Melissa's apartment in Austin. The apartment is part of a quiet house with multiple units, and was about a 1 mile walk from downtown. It was very close to a couple of convenient busses, and about a 10 minute walk from the most incredible Whole Foods you've ever seen.
The apartment is definitely quirky and charming -- and Melissa let us know we were welcome to any food or anything else in the house that we needed. We really felt at home! (Although the lock for the main door takes a special touch, but Laura figured that one out pretty quick!) The kitchen had everything we needed, the wifi was fast, and the bed was super comfortable.
There's also a fantastic little bagel shop within a block of her house where we were able to pick up some breakfast, as well as lunch to carry on for later in the day. The walk downtown is up and down several hills, so if you plan to walk from here make sure to bring your good walking shoes -- but the regular busses provide a good alternative. (While we were there the city was also testing this cool feature which let you use your phone to purchase and use bus passes... awesome!)
Additionally, all of the people in Austin we encountered were SUPER friendly, and we had many many great meals. We were in town during the inaugural Formula 1 weekend, so the city was taken over with events, free music, etc., and AirBNB even hosted a mixer one night and free breakfasts at some local spots as well.
This is a perfect apartment for a couple who are looking for a comfortable place to stay and don't mind putting on their walking shoes to get around town. We definitely hope to be back!
Melissa's place is charming and quite confortable. Great location. If you are used to walk, it is a good but totally reasonable bus to central part of town (e.g.: Capitol or 6th) and it is well served by buses (and buses are so cheap in Austin !!!). It is not to far from a Whole food if you want to do grocery. There is a cute coffee shop that also has nice healty/vege/vegan options 5 minutes from there and other more greasy spoon places around. Plus, it is a short distance from the amazing "Bacon" restaurant. (website hidden)
Also, Melissa's bed is confortable. Go there !
Melissa was great! Communicated well with me and kept the apartment in order. I would take her as a guest again any day.
Wonderful independent travelers! Very pleasant, great communicator, & left everything in great shape.
Just the kind of airbnb guests that are great to host.
