Our story begins with family, namely our grandfather Sheikh Ateeg. Sheikh Ateeg was famous regionally in Wadi Rum and in all of Jordan. He knew Lawrence of Arabia as a child when Lawrence came to Wadi Rum, and was the first tour guide of Wadi Rum to host the first climber to visit Wadi Rum frequently. Tony Howard visited and wrote about Sheikh Ateeg, who arranged the first camel tours from Petra to Amman in the 60s.
Difallah Ateeg, our father, was born and raised in the desert of Wadi Rum, and knew the land, archaeology, history, and geology of the region at a very personal level. He coordinated the drawing of the first maps of the region, and had intimate knowledge of everything from caring for the herds to guiding and climbing. He once worked as a climbing rescuer for those who got themselves stuck high up in the mountains, and was very familiar with first aid practices and care.
Our father and his brothers were trained from birth to be experienced guides and hosts for visitors to Wadi Rum. He in turn taught us to continue the tradition of the Bedouin culture… to welcome all visitors and to ensure a memorable experience in Wadi Rum for all. Today we inherit and carry on this practice of warm hospitality passed down through the Ateeg family.
