I'm raising three kids:
boy 12 and two daughters 9 and 10 y o.
I wish to have more time to spend with them.
If you plan to go to New York to party and have fun during the night, that's the perfect place. The apartment is small but was roomy enough to sleep the 7 of us (3 adults and 4 big kids) and it was clean. The location is convenient : close to subway, bars and restaurants.
But if you just want a place to have a good sleep after strolling the city all day long, don't go, especially during the weekend. It's very loud.
Paul asked us to "not make any noise" inside the building but I think we were the only one to care about that. On Friday night, the couple next door had a fight around 11PM, the guy was screaming and hammering on the door that his girlfriend didn't want to open. My sister was alone with the kids and was really afraid. On Saturday night, I couldn't sleep between 3 am and 5 am because of the noise inside the building (people laughing and screaming each time they were entering the building).
The 4 kids were sleeping in the bedroom street side and they all complained about the noise that drunk people were making in the street.
Small details, if you like to have breakfast before leaving in the morning, you will not have enough dishes (we had to share the only 3 spoons).
We found it weird that the appointment was not in front of the right building.
We arrived at Astor Place at 9:45 PM and were surprised to receive a text from Paul reminding us that there was a mandatory fee for arrival after 10PM. He never mentioned that when I asked him if it was OK to check in around 9PM.
We found everything alright. Communication with Paul was easy and he was quick to respond both pre stay and during. The apartment is small but have everything you need after a long cold day in the city! Great location in the heart of East Village, very close to the subway and to a lot of shops and restaurants.
Good apartment for a good price. Great location. although only one lock was working for the front door we did not encounter any problems.
This apartment is in a great location amongst nyu students with many inexpensive restaurants and shops near busses and subways within a couple of blocks. . St marks place and astor place are a great location to walk to the village, union square and broadway shows. The two bedrooms can sleep six with three big beds. The bathroom is large. The one flight up is convient. The kitchen is small but gas a good stove, oven and microwave. I hope Paul changes the soda in the living area and lowers the tv to make a more comfortable place to watch tv. The apartment worked great for me and my sister and would work for two couples or a family of 6. It is quite small though.
Paul was easy to work with and the place we stayed at was in a great location. We had a group of 6 and it worked perfectly.
Our experience with Paul and the apartment was quite pleasant. The apartment was in a fantastic location near a wide array of restaurants and bars. During the whole time, Paul was quickly responsive and very attentive.
WARNING! Do NOT rent this apartment. It is extremely small, very old, dirty and in a scary building where I would not feel safe with my family. Looks nothing at all like the pictures - they are EXTREMELY misleading to the point of being criminally deceptive.
I should've been suspicious when the owner didn't respond to some of my questions, and then had a "friend" of his meet me to give me the keys. I went up to the apartment with her, took a look at walked out immediately without taking the keys.
This was my first negative experience with airbnb and I hope they will take this listing off as it does not meet the standards I've come to accept with airbnb.
Luckily I was able to find another absolutely wonderful apartment in the West Village which I would highly recommend. Overall I still think airbnb is a great tool. Just look for warning signals.
The other reviews are accurate. The location is very convenient to the subway and restaurants, but can be loud due to the bars on the street. The apartment is quite small, but was clean and the bathroom was spacious and nice by NYC standards. Good communication by Paul so no issues there. Served our purpose fine and works for the price.
We had a different apartment: if compared to that one showed in the images it resulted older, but we had a double bed more, so three double beds and a sofa bed (which could not be used because located in the pathway between the bathroom and the rest of the apartment). It was clean, but apparently lived by someone (shoes, a suitcase and so much private stuff left in the closets). Beds were not very comfortable and were a bit noisy: two of them were in a big bedroom and one in another one. Temperature was perfect, hot inside and very cold outside. Quiet building although the neighborhood (email hidden)ly one. Great location: everything you may need is there. Walking distance to Greenwich Village and Soho.
Price was good.
We have never met Paul (a lady called Angela gave us the keys) but we always kept in touch with him by text messages. We needed a second set of keys and got it in a laundry store located in the 7th st with a deposit of $50.
Everything went well -- nice apartment, clean, good location. As at least one other review has noted, the place is quite small -- the bedrooms aren't much bigger than the beds they enclose, with just a little walking-around space, and pretty narrow hallways (although the bathroom is comparatively roomy). But for the five of us and our needs -- we were attending a conference at NYU and basically just needed a place to crash for 6-7 hours -- it was a good fit and a great value for the price we paid. Paul was very responsive to communications and the whole thing went off without a hitch... would be happy to stay there again if we're ever in a similar situation again.
