Pros: neighborhood (safe, lot of shops, restaurants, bars on the Steinway av), near public transportation to Manhattan (direct line R to downtown- 15mins), clean apartment, privacy, Sebastian gave us valuable tips for NYC.
Cons: bed was a bit too soft, due to the wooden construction of the house it is not soundproof, basic/ partly old furnishing (taking into account the rate of the room, this is something I was expecting though and not really a con), not allowed to use the stove.
Recommendation? I will definitely come back to Astoria on my next visit to New York. Regarding the apartment/ room, don't expect something luxurious in that price range, and don't forget it is New York. If you are looking for a clean place to sleep and eat at reasonable prices in the neighborhood and that is not far away from Manhattan, go for this place.
We had 4 nights with Andrea and Sebastian. It is a nice and clean room and we can definitely recommend it. The house is located very close to the subway and it's easy to find. We eat breakfast on the corner right by the entrance to the station and it was perfectly fine and especially the price.
A lovely large room. Minutes from the sub and places to buy food! I stayed for two nights and this room suited my needs with great access to Manhattan.
A very nice room in a nice neighborhood. Super close to a subway station and we felt safe walking around at night on Broadway to bars and restaurant near Steinway street (around 10 minutes of walk).
It was easy to communicate with Andrea and Sebastian, and we had quick answers to our questions.
The room and the bathroom were clean, and the room is large enough for two. Only thing to notice, the windows are located on Broadway, where cars, trucks, buses and walkers pass all day and night. It can be noisy. The subway also probably passes beneath the room, because you can hear its rumble and the floor vibrates (not that much, but still) when it arrives at the station. I would not recommend it to someone who has difficulty sleeping.
If you are driving there, there is enough parking space in the residential streets around the house. We arrived Friday around 5 PM, and had no difficulty finding one. We did not move until Monday afternoon.
For the breakfast, a bagel shop is located one or two blocks away, and there are a lot of restaurants and dive bars around, as well as groceries and drug stores.
If you have time, a visit to the Museum of the Moving Image, located a couple of blocks away, is a very good idea!
I would recommend it and return to this apartment.
The room was nice and bigger then I expected. Andrea and Sebastian are the perfect hosts and the stay with them was very good.
Andrea and Sebastian are nice hosts and try everything they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The room and the house have definitley seen better days, but the neighbour was safe and there were a lot of restaurant and shops close to the house. The best thing was that the subway station is just around the corner and it really just took 10 minutes to get to Manhattan. Especially for travellers on a lower budget, I could recommend this place, since it is very easy to get to all the sights, it is in a safe neighbour and Sebastian and Andrea really make sure you have everything you need.
Perfect Room ! Super nice people who help with everything you need. Near to subway + manhatten and nice restaurants, safe place. Comfortable bed and a lot of privacy. Thank u so much guys, had an awesome stay :)
Clean and comfortable room with friendly hosts. Very friendly and willing to talk. Cute doggie too! It was close to the subway and close to a pharmacy in case you needed some last minute supplies. You could hear the subway some, otherwise a quiet experience. There was a cute corner store close too incase you wanted some fresh fruit for breakfast or a snack. It is about a $25 plus tip ride via Taxi from LaGuardia.
We stayed at Sebastian & Andrea's March 18th-23rd. When we arrived Andrea welcomed us in and showed us around, she was very nice! The room looked just like it did in pictures! Very clean and cozy! It was exactly a block from the Subway (very convenient) and very close to the groceery store (also convenient, they have an amazing breakfast!) The room had 2 doors on both sides of the wall, whcih we had keys to and could lock anytime we left so we felt really good and safe about leaving our things. The only thing that was the problem was the mattress. It was really hard and was really uncomfortable to sleep on. If we were staying for just couple of days it wouldn't have made a difference but we stayed 5 nights so it took a toll. Also the window in the room didn't have privacy bc people could just run by and look into your room so we didn't feel good about that. Wished there was also some shared living space to relax in than just our bedroom but we know this is airbnb so we realize what we got ourselves into. Enjoy your stay if you stay here. Very clean and simple just like the hosts advertise!
Sebastian was a fantastic guest! Very respectful of my apartment and good with communication. Hope he returns sometime, highly recommended
We've known Sebastian and Andrea for several years now and we consider them to be not just our friends, but our family. They are kind, responsible and in the meantime outgoing and just the type of people you would always want to have around. Professionally, they are considerate, respectful and will do everything in their power to make your stay enjoyable. The care for their guests shows the moment you walk in the apartment. The space is immaculate and you will be welcomed with clean linens, towels and a personal care kit, giving you the feeling that you are in an upscale hotel (at a fraction of the price) and not in a shared apartment.
The apartment is well located, just one block from the subway with easy commute to Manhattan and every other part of New York. The fact that they are New Yorkers is more than you can ask for since they can give you great ideas as to where to go and what to do to really experience the city.
