Minneapolis-based. Philippines-born, Portland (Oregon)-raised. Asian American Studies Professor at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Cultural anthropologist by training. Author of _Filipino Crosscurrents: Oceanographies of Seafaring, Masculinities, and Globalization_ (University of Minnesota Press, 2011), an ethnography about Manila and Oakland as port cities; TransPacific maritime trade; and Filipino seamen working in the global shipping industry. I love the ocean and rivers, forests, woods, and the tropics. I also enjoy biking, trail running, lap swimming, cooking, watching Southeast Asian films (and other international media), reading (especially travel narratives and post-colonial fiction), and learning about cities, architecture, art, and design. An active guy who also enjoys solitude and stillness.
