Artist, Lake Medina Texas. See me on airbnb.
Laurence was a perfect host, we could have spent the entire weekend talking to him and enjoying his company.
Rustic perfectly describes Hill Country Portico, everything you need and nothing you don't! Laurence was an unexpected surprise and it turned he had a lot in common with my wife and I. We were attending a folk festival in Kerrville so didn't spend too much time at the Portico, but we enjoyed the time we spend there. Would go back in a heartbeat!
Laurence was a very friendly welcoming host. Our room was nice and we slept well. We enjoyed the conversations with Laurence and he gave us very helpfull advices about locations to visit and to get there. We would like to stay here again.
Thank you for the hospitality.
We opted to stay at the portico because we wanted a peaceful, quiet break from our road trip. What we got was so much more! The portico is tucked away next to the lake, which is currently dry but still very beautiful. Laurence gave us plenty of advice as to what to do and see, including maps for stunning walks and scenery we would have otherwise missed. He is a very warm, charming and interesting host and we spent every evening in his company with a beer and his beautiful dog, Zoe (who also acts as guardian and a very effective alarm clock in the morning!). His incredible artwork adorns the walls, making the place feel like home and adding to the sense of vibrance and originality. The room was exactly as described; we slept like logs the whole time we were there and wanted for nothing. Had there not been so much to see outside Lakehills, we could have happily spent out entire time at the portico! The kitchen is well equipped for small meals with a nearby grocery store that stocks all the essentials, but with a decent Mexican restaurant just down the road if you don't fancy cooking.
We can't recommend staying here highly enough, we only wish we could have stayed longer and would love to come back in the future if only to remind Laurence of the British idioms he's been missing!
My 12 year old daughter and I spent the weekend and Laurence's place and we had a wonderful weekend. His place is perfect if you want to get out of the city. Here you can embrace the hill country, the birds, the wilderness, the evening stars, sunrise, sunsets and all the trails around the area.
I purchased an art class for my daughter and she loved it. Laurence is a natural teacher and his life experiences, wisdom, and knowledge were invaluable to my daughter. It was an experience she'll always remember. I highly recommend his class!
I too enjoyed Laurence's life story's and experiences. We had incredible conversations and I left felt privileged to meet and spend some time with him.
I highly recommend staying at Laurence's place
We enjoyed our time at this peaceful, eclectic guest house very much. The room was comfy and well-appointed. Laurence was a delightful host who afforded us privacy but also was open to sharing his time and art with us. People who stay here will leave with a very memorable experience and a very interesting, story-filled new friend.
I was looking for a place from which to explore the hill country and that was perfect for me. Laurence was very welcoming and it was quite interesting to talk about biculturalism with him.
The place was comfortable and tastefully furnished - but it's rustic (bugs and all), so you have to like that sort of environment. I had a great stay, and I would definitely recommend this place.
If remote, wild, and rustic is your aim, Laurence's place is perfect. That's just what I was looking for. The place is hard to describe -- You pull in through part of a forest, come upon his really awesome artist studio-slash-home, then take a hairpin, grassy turn to the portico. It's right on Medina Lake, which is dried up at the moment, but that state just added to the experience for me. The portico is adorable. Laurence is a really friendly, interesting, creative guy. He was a great host. It's not far from various levels of food + entertainment -- closeby country dive bars and restaurants to all that Bandera offers. My husband and I had a relaxing time.
Laurence's portico was the perfect spot for indulging in a little bit of Bandera Cowboy culture. We loved it. The portico is simply and beautifully furnished with a great outdoor space to kick back with a beer. Laurence was a charming and entertaining host, just wish we 'd had more time to enjoy this lovely spot.
Laurence was a wonderful host and so was Zoe. My goal was rest and relaxation and this place served my purpose beautifully. I would describe Laurence's place, and the surrounding hill country, as rustic charm at it's best. Peace and quiet overall. I would venture into Bandera during the day to laze about by the river. This is a place to disconnect from the stresses of city life!
Laurence and his daughter were very nice guests, respectful, considerate and friendly. Definitely recommended.
I LOVE THIS HOUSE. Lawrence built it with his very own hands. It's amazing and beautiful and quiet and relaxing and lovely and comfortable and clean. And you will be surrounded by his amazing paintings and drawings. I stayed here over Christmas. We made fires in the rocks. We walked in the river. We hiked with the dog. We drove way out to buy some awesome beef jerky. We hung out in the Cowboy Capital. Stay here if you can. You couldn't have a better time. Lawrence couldn't be a better human.
What a marvelously fun, free spirited, intelligent, warm, engaging, entertaining host. An artist who has lived all over the world, touched so many lives in so many ways, and hosts a place (or should I say, an "experience") that is one of his many "living" / architectural designs and creations. True art. Wonderfully hip. Magical location along the river. The perfect storm in terms of... host, indoor/outdoor environment and geographical location. You could NOT possibly go wrong.
