You are no doubt much wider traveled than I though I would be on the go more often if the opportunity came more frequently.
Formerly, travel in Mexico helped me learn a modicum of Spanish; French in college, (SF State and UC Berkeley) helped there as well as in Europe. After graduate school in San Francisco I was lucky to teach in Japan for several years, while learning some conversational and written Japanese. I live in San Francisco where working in hospitality/tours and meetings keeps the languages at least usable. Occasional visits to old haunts and educational sites in Tokyo and Kyoto help refresh, as well as offer new photo opportunities.
Movies, plays and exhibitions are things I enjoy with friends and alone to study and confer, together with great restaurants to enjoy throughout the Bay Area. Friends with pets (and without) frequently ask me to sit their homes while away; that in itself is a kind of vacation, schedules permitting.
My extended family live mostly in the eastern areas where I sometimes travel for holidays, though year end will always find me right here in Baghdad By The Bay, in the fog, in the rain, and in the Sun.
