I had emailed Omar several times to ask directions to the apartment and to let him know that I would not have a means of communication upon arrival in Tunis. I was told it was easy to find. Our flight did not arrive until late so I made sure that someone would be waiting for me as well. Long story short: it was not easy to find and no one was waiting. Apparently he had left even though I had been assured that this would not be a problem. Luckily the lady that lived upstairs had a key so we were not stranded in Sidi Bou Said with all of our luggage and no place to go at 1am. The consistent planning on my part to sort out any potential problems seemed to do no good.
The place itself was nice and in a great location-beautiful actually-but there was an overwhelming smell of moth balls and pesticides. This was not my 1st trip to Tunisia so I am aware of the bug problems but this was way overkill. We could not leave anything in the closet unless we wanted to smell like an old lady all day and the windows had to be open constantly so as to not gag on the smell. Upon arrival there was also glass all over the living room floor.
I'm trying my best not to sound harsh but I feel that future renters should be warned.
Like I mentioned above, we enjoyed our stay but there were many things that made it hard to endure at times, like the hot water being off for at least two days. I don't think that this was the renters fault but it was quite annoying considering that the price was on par with several hotels that offered much more comfort and amenities. I personally wouldn't stay there again but that doesn't mean that you won't enjoy it.
The souk in Sidi Bou is right outside your door along with many cafes and restaurants just down the hill. If you're looking for a more DIY Sidi Bou experience I would recommend it but if you're looking for some luxury this is not the place for you.
A comfortable apartment centrally placed in this attractive coastal suburb, and very quiet. It's on the lower floor of a house but feels quite private with its own sunny courtyard. The lounge is nicely decorated and is a good place to relax.
Omar and his aunt (who lives upstairs) were very helpful with the few problems that occurred during our stay. The satellite TV worked only intermittently on the sole English channel available. Note that the advertised wireless internet is not wifi but the use of a 3G dongle. Omar assured us that wifi would be available soon.
A good place food couples to stay.
Response from Mimo:
Thank you Andrew, wifi is now installed and over a 100 tv channnels works, hope to see you again.
Had a great stay in Sidi Bou Said,. the appartment is well-located in the heart of Sid Bou Said, but you can't hear any noise of traffic or tourists. The terrace is a HUGE asset, surrounded by greenery. Recommend to anyone wanting to be near all the Roman sites. The owners upstairs were really nice and often invited me for cup of tea on their terrace. Omar was eficient in sorting stuff.
They were really cute couples.. They were so respectful of the flats rules and also they were very understandig, and satisfactory.. I strongly recommend Mimo and his friends to all host :)
