The Bali Hut was exactly what I needed for a long (2 weeks!) and relaxing de-stress in Hawaii. The hut itself was clean, quiet, and was well-equipped with basic amenities. The bed was quite comfortable, and I did not find the frogs as disruptive as other reviewers--well, except for the one who got in and decided to chirp near my head (a gentle removal and all was fine!). It rained often while I was there, which raised the humidity, but with the ceiling fan, sleep was easy.
The outdoor bath is actually off the back end of the hut, also above the main trees, but quite secluded. The shower is always hot.
The SE side of the island is quiet--Pahoa is indeed unique, seemingly as much a commune as town at times--but you can reach most of the rest of the island by car on day-trips, the only exception, perhaps, being Kona itself (over 2 hours one way)--but then, you weren't looking for a resort town when you booked here! I spent most of my time in the parks along the volcanic south shore, Volcano Nat'l (awesome!), and day trips to local communities. Easy access.
Dickie is wonderful: very kind, quick to assist with anything or answer questions (additional drinking water, for instance), and respectful of the privacy that such a treehouse suggests. Finally, I should mention that the Bali Hut is not a true "treehouse" in that it is built upon trees, but is a hut raised up amongst the trees on sturdy posts. Any worried about swaying trees and tilting floors need not!
Thank you, Dickie, for a wonderful stay!
Dickie was very kind. She met us after dark to help us locate the Bali hut. She even guided us to a few locations that we had not planned on visiting that turned out to be a few of our favorite places on the island. This hut & the frogs were magical.
My wife & I thoroughly enjoyed our four nights at the Bali Hut. It was as hoped; a rustic retreat off the beaten tourism path. The bed was more comfortable than expected, the minimal kitchen was great for cooking up our breakfasts, and the house itself was charmingly unique and endearing. We loved the local area and were able to adventure daily, returning for peaceful nights' sleeps amidst the calming chorus of the tree frogs.
Bali hut is truly a experience living with nature. Every evening we hear loud sounds of birds n insects. The first day, it was little uncomfortable given that this place is farther from the main road and it's totally dark. Dickie did make sure that we are aware of this place and guided each step before we got there, the room was as expected. We didn't get a chance to meet Dickie after the first day though. The restroom though is open from the side giving an awesome view to the huge forest like backyard.
The Bali Hut was a great simple retreat in a beautiful native Ohia forest in a really convenient and pretty location. It's raised off the ground about 10 feet which puts you out of reach of most jungle insects and gives you a unique treehouse view of the surrounding forest. Being in the tree canopy puts you right next to the coqui frogs. I used earplugs the first night but found their calls soothed me to sleep the next few nights. The Bali Hut is insulated so that their noise is tamed down "just enough". Bring earplugs just in case.
It is very small and was perfect for me as a solo traveler. Even with two people, you shouldn't be there long enough to feel crowded because there are so many sights and activities around every corner of Puna - it's all about the outdoors here, which you have a great view of from the covered lanai. The Bali Hut is simple, rustic, unique, and private just like Hawaii should be.
The hostess, Dickie, was nice and gives you lots of privacy. The hut is located far away from the main house giving you privacy and the sense that you can come and go and do what you please without disturbing anyone. A private bathroom and kitchenette in this price range is rare, and I think the Bali Hut is an excellent value best used as a launch pad and a sweet place to lay your head after a full day of sightseeing.
The Bali Hut Treehouse was AMAZING!!! It had everything we needed and was just a short drive from Hilo. The futon was very comfortable and there is nothing like showering outside listening to nature. Our host was great also and recommended a couple of things for us to do such as the hot springs and lava viewing. We did both of these things and they were so fun! Overall this is the best experience that I've had with Air BnB and i would love to come back and stay again!
An amazing and very unique place to explore the east of Hawai´i and the Volcanoes National Park. Surrounded only by jungle, birds an frogs (bring Your ear-plugs!) it gave us a pleasant adventurous feeling on our vacation.
I recommend this place and host to my friends and family and would definitely stay here again.
Amazing experience. Lots of privacy and awesome peaceful alone time. Dickie was always there when needed. Very dependable internet She is a great positive person :)
A very nice en exotic place to stay! Almost like camping out in a rain forest. Coqui frogs took some getting used to though. Light and normal sleepers alike would do well to bring good earplugs. Stephanie is a lovely hostess, though we'd not seen each other very often she did make us feel very welcome and at home.
