Stephen and I had what seemed a congenial relationship until I informed him privately, after his departure and in advance of my submission to airbnb, that I would be deducting a nominal (he referred to it as "petty") cleaning charge for a caked on substance in the oven, which spilled into the broiler and onto the floor, documented in pictures. It had to be scraped before oven cleaner was applied. My cheapest cleaning service quote: $60; I charged $35.
His words: "I actually meant to clean the oven as it was only some chocolate cake left on the oven top ( bottom section ) which I am sure would not take longer than 5 minutes to clean. As for the bottom part of the oven I did not use so I never even saw that dirt."
My lease agreement, which he reviewed and signed, states that the unit must be left in condition for the next guest.
This is the email I received the day before they left:
We will be leaving at 10am. Thanks for a wonderful stay I will be sure to leave a great review on Airbnb. Regards, Stephen"
After informing him of the charge, I received a series of insulting and threatening emails that I choose not to share publicly.
During their stay, and with their understanding and several means of advance notice, written and verbal, I had the windows replaced with double paned sliding windows. It was an all day project and I did a final check in all the units to assure that the workmen had cleaned up the debris.
In doing so, I inadvertently opened the door to the unit he was occupying. It was unlocked and I was unaware of their return. I did not enter the unit once I saw they were present. He has, however, made this one of the post departure complaints in his emails.
He also claims his linens weren't changed for two weeks, which is false. Not only were the linens changed on the day of window installation, the spare towels I keep in a storage bin under the bed were used and soiled. He had ample fresh linens, plus more.
In addition, Rebecca informed me, on the day of their arrival, that a friend would be staying with them. More utility expense for me.
It is always my intent to see that my guests have a positive experience. My reviews reflect that.
In seven years I have withheld cleaning fees only three times, and this is one of them.
I responded to his emails that I won't be bullied by threats of a bad review when the issue at hand is legitimate. I regret that he chose not to work this out amicably.
My reviews to date reflect the kind of service I provide to my guests.
I sincerely love this business and take pride in my work.
My ratings for Mr. Carr reflect the experience I had with him BEFORE his vitriolic attacks.
