I am German by nationality but live in (website hidden) the early years of my working life I got infected by the travel virus. Luckily, travel came with my work and most of my tickets to the Far East and Middle East were paid for...and this at a time when mass tourism had not set in. In Thailand 'tourists' were the GIs on leave from the Vietnam war and in Nepal the majority of visitors were the Hippies of the 69 generation in the early seventies. My virus mutated to the next level: Short stays to exotic areas were not enough anymore (having to leave when you just warmed up..) - now the aim was to live and work there and that is what I did in the last 20 years before my retirement in the early years of the new millennium.
How did we come To Cyprus? Before leaving the Arabian desert for good, we went house hunting in Malta and Cyprus - both places for T-shirt sailors. We chose Cyprus mainly because of its size. In Malta, there is no escape from the symbols of mass tourism (multi-story hotels, which you can see from everywhere, and which look depressing in off-season when they are empty). The motto for the choice of our location was to live off the beaten track with the local community. This might not be the best for our letting ambitions, but the alternative travel philosophy of Airbnb suits us well, and so far we had very nice and memorable talks with our guests
