The advertised space (Garden Suite Temescal) I reserved had a problem with bedbugs that Rebecca was honest about. She said she had another "nice" room and my mistake was not asking for pictures. The room was cluttered with 3 tall bookcases full of her books, a 4-drawer metal filing cabinet, a drafting table with various cans of paint and bottles holding paint brushes, a small chest of drawers (with no empty drawers) and a large desk (again with no empty drawers). The single captain's bed was over the only heat vent in the room, had no headboard and the head of the bed was not up against a wall so reading comfortably in bed was not possible. The closet had some clothes on the shelves and smelled very musty. The bathroom which I shared with another long term tenant had no room in the medicine cabinet at all- it was full of Rebecca's belongings and she had moved in with her partner 6 months previously. I helped Rebecca move the drafting tale out of the room and we moved the bed so the head was up against a wall. Still a very cluttered space for $1295/month. The rest of the house had a lots of large dust bunnies and was really not very clean. Rebecca seemed to think that the renters should be doing the cleaning. I don't mind cleaning up after myself but I think the place needs to be clean to start with. She also got very upset when I cleaned out the fridge/freezer of all the things that didn't belong to the other tenant or myself-apparently I threw out some of her things. Why she had things in the fridge/freezer when she moved out 6 months before I don't know. I have a small dog and finding a place for the three months I would be in the area that would allow a pet was difficult. I did speak with Rebecca about the lack of cleanliness and the clutter in the room and her response was basically to tell me I should find another place to stay if I didn't like it. It was very stressful having to come to the house after work and look for another place. While I was looking, I saw the "Garden Suite" advertised on (website hidden) for $1150/mo ($145 cheaper than on Airbnb). I feel like I got gouged and that Rebecca has a lot to learn about hospitality. I paid her $395/wk for 3 wks. I said I thought I should get the cleaning fee of $35 returned and she did return $22 saying that she only got that much from Airbnb despite my forwarding an e-mail from Airbnb showing the breakdown of the $482/wk I paid for the first week.
Perhaps thing were better/cleaner when she lived on the property but my experience was the worst I've had staying in an Airbnb property.
I booked Rebecca's attic space for an employee that was visiting our Emeryville office for a couple weeks. The attic space was quite satisfactory and "just what he expected". Without a car, he was able to get to the office and around the Bay Area easily with the half mile proximity to BART. This is a great walking neighborhood.
The house is kept clean and the big garden was a nice bonus.
I have enjoyed meeting Rebecca and will definitely recommend this property.
Rebecca and her place are completely lovely. I had a great stay and would highly recommend her place to others. The house is in a great location with lots of delicious food right nearby.
This is a fabulous place to stay - everything in the description is spot-on, as we say in the UK. It's beautiful and the garden is lovely. Temescal is probably the most exciting place in the Bay Area right now and access to the city could not be easier.
Rebecca is great: a Berkeley native who knows San Francisco backwards and can help you in whatever artistic, culinary or adventure yen you may have.
If it's available, Grab It!
P.S. Oh, and Noodle is obliged by union statutory rules to growl at you for five minutes but is then the sweetest dog in the whole world and will be your friend for life.
Rebecca is an all right person, she should just reconsider some particulars where hosting is concerned
House was clean, well maintained, room in perfect condition. Bathroom and shower were spotless and working properly. Internet worked with no issues. Rebecca was very responsive and cordial. Roommates were quiet and respectful. Overall a very positive experience, quick easy and pleasant in every respect. Kitchen well stocked, clean, and functional. Laundry convenient and working. Neighborhood felt very safe and close to restaurants and BART.
Would definitely stay again and recommend.
I'm still here, and I'm still so happy. Rebecca is an awesome Airbnb-er...no she's an awesome person. Period. Her house is reflective of her eclectic personality, and it couldn't be more cozy. She's straight-forward with what she requires of you as a guest, so you're not left with guess work--a quality I definitely appreciate. She hasn't been in the house herself, but the other guests she's chosen have been fantastic. She obviously puts a lot of thought into making sure the home remains 'homey". It's a great distance from everywhere--I commute into Civic Center in SF via BART every day without any issues. I walk into Berkeley often. MacArthur station is the best BART stop in my opinion--it's so central, and has multiple lines running through it so you don't need to transfer anywhere, and you rarely have to wait more than 10 mins for any train. Rebecca is honest, funny, and generous. If you don't choose to stay here of all your options in the bay area, you're an idiot.
Response from Rebecca:
You are awesome too Kiran. But I'll go so far as to say a random person isn't necessarily....an idiot...! we all have our complicated reasons...Thanks so much for your cheery self in my house.
Rebecca is a great and uncomplicated host. Great neighbourhood with lots of nice cafés & restaurants. It's well connected to go to SF/Berkeley by Bart/Bus or even Bike. I can recommend this place!
Wow! Rebecca is a great host. I stayed when plums were ripening in her garden and I ate a bunch of tasty plums. All the rooms of the house are decorated with lots of eclectic artwork. The house is located in Temescal in a great neighborhood equidistant to two BART stations. Lot's of great restaurants close-by as well as coffee houses. I'd definitely recommend staying here if you're visiting the Bay Area.
We enjoyed our stay with Rebecca. The garden is a huge plus. The location is also great, plenty of nice restaurants and coffee shops nearby. Plus a bus takes you to the Berkeley Campus in 20min.
Rebecca is an awesome guest, quiet, respectful, a good communicator, and helpful (she fixed a door knob)! I also got some Airbnb tips from her, as she's been a long-standing host. She's easy to approach and a cheerful person. She and her partner are welcome back any time.
It was great to have Rebecca and Ingrid here - very uncomplicated, the whole planning was smooth, and they treated my apartment very well. We just met very briefly at the end, and it was really nice - I would love to have them here again!
Rebecca was a wonderful guest . Being an airbnb host herself makes her an even better guest . She stayed briefly , and we'd love to have her back . Highly recommended .
the guest was 84 years old Rebecca's mother,a very nice lady not in a very good health; but we weren't adviced that she was that aged and needed a special care, especially coming on her own;. we would have asked Rebecca to check in with her.
I was happy to host Rebecca and Ingrid and would recommend them to anyone. It was a pleasure to meet and talk with them near the end of their stay and they're welcome back any time. =]
Rebecca was great great, and interesting. A lot of fun. She stayed with her girlfriend Ingrid, who was, both were fantastic, amazing. Everything was perfect from the beginning to the end. (I am regretful now we did not speak about her funny dog.) Rebecca can stay anytime, and I look forward to keeping in touch.
I experienced Rebecca as intelligent, interested in the world around her, and committed to the well-being of our planet. We hosted Rebecca in our Santa Fe home for two nights and found her to be respectful, trustworthy, and friendly. I highly recommend this motivated and present woman as a guest, and sense she would be a very helpful and available host to her own guests.
Rebecca is a wonderful host and has a great house in one of the coolest Oakland neighborhoods. Rebecca always knows great things to do around the East Bay, great hikes, and great eats. Her house is wonderfully decorated with fun colors and art, and she has created a fabulous garden that is great for chilling out.
Rebecca is a great host and a great person! I stayed back in 2008 for the month of July with a friend (maybe her first guests?) and shamefully never submitted a reference (better late than never). She really made us feel at home and we had a great time. Hopefully we'll cross paths again some day!
I stayed at Rebecca's place for a month while I undertook some research at Berkeley. The house is very nice, in a really good neighborhood which has a lot of nice restaurants and bars nearby. It was also very easy to get to both Berkeley and San Francisco from Rebecca's too so it was very convenient. I had a great time staying with Rebecca who is an excellent host and a lot of fun too - if I go back to Oakland I'll definitely be getting back in touch with her.
Rebecca is a friendly and trustworthy person. I know that as a host, she has enjoyed making guests comfortable and being helpful. She is knowlegable on a wide variety of subjects and is fun to talk with about her experiences in the Bay Area and in her travels. I would highly recommend her to any other person who might host her.
Rebecca is in the 95th percentile of people persons! She values personal connection above all. She is also no-nonsense, self-activating, practical and athletic.
