"Luckily we did not see or hear any mouses." This kind of sums up how poorly this stay went, and we kind of had a bad feeling about it from the start: this is an old building in Brooklyn, a well lived-in (but well-loved!) apartment that's probably not ideal for a first-time AirBNB'er who's used to hotels. It's a great location, very affordable, and we love it. (Btw, other things neither seen nor heard by Antonio: tigers, lepers, bats, vagrants, dust monsters...).
From the start, it seemed like Antonio was anticipating the worst: our spoons weren't big enough (so we supplied him with larger spoons); the kitchen was too dark (despite four light sources), so he proceeded to mess with the main fixture, after being told the building owner is going to repair it (and he ended up shorting a circuit, so our neighbor had to flip the breaker in the basement; we were half-expecting to see our books rearranged by color when we got back. Oh, and ALL THE LIGHTS WORK)...
We're not a hotel, and we can't always control the state of the shared entrance. Nor can we remodel the exterior to make it more inviting (like next door). I'm sitting here in the living room, my toddler is playing on the "dust depot" carpet, and the sun is streaming quite nicely through the "incredibly dirty" windows (they're not). There are cockroaches outside, in the street (this is Brooklyn), but we've never seen any inside (and again, we have a toddler, so we actually take this kind of thing seriously!).
So, prospective guest who is reading this: if you want a 5-star hotel experience, or a glass-encased shiny condo, our apartment might not be for you. But if you want an affordable stay in a great Williamsburg location, where actual Brooklynites live, please take Antonio's review with a grain of salt.
The apartment is cleaned by a professional cleaner after each guest, but because it's an old, well lived-in place, it's never going to have the spic-and-span atmosphere of a hotel or a condo... Sorry that you felt it needed to be cleaned better—we'll mention it to the cleaner.
Also sorry you found the air mattress uncomfortable—it's a new kingsize Coleman air mattress and we haven't had any complaints about it in the past... In fact, when we were renovating last year, my husband and I slept on one just like it for 3 weeks, which is why we stick to that brand. Anyway, again, sorry you found it uncomfortable.
