I work in public radio in the US... run a national organization for people who supervise the djs, announcers, etc. My wife works in mental health, teaches writing to women and is an artist. We live on a farm in New York state (4 hours from the city) but have lived in big cities (Washington DC, New York, Minneapolis, San Francisco) as well as rural areas. We have stayed in modest hostels to very nice hotels - very flexible and prefer to experience the real life of a place rather than just tourist attractions. We believe in leaving a place nicer than when we arrived. I'm 67 and we have 4 children, 6 grandchildren - but still very inquisitive, ages of friends are very varied.
