CA native who moved to Brooklyn, NY with my girlfriend.
We are vegetarians and animal lovers! We have four of our own!
I stayed with Vanessa and Kathryn for about three months, and they are excellent hostesses. They made me feel very welcome and they improved my stay in New York so much! They are really warm and kindhearted people,
About the dogs: they do get a bit worked up they first time you meet them, but after that they are super cuddly and friendly. I really miss them all- I wanted to steal one and bring him back to Sweden. But Vanessa just loves them to much, so unfortunately that didn't work out
The room is kind of small, but the bed is big and comfy, and I kept my clothes and suitcase in a closet in the livingroom which worked out fine. The kitchen is nice, and again, these girls are so nice and friendly so if I go back to NY and if they still live there, I couldn't think of a better place to stay.
Kathryn and Vanessa are great hosts. They're californian-cool and party beasts when needed xD If people might worry about their 4 dogs : they are just fun and harmless. Their place is a minute-walk away from the 2, 3, 4 and 5 subway lines from where you can get in no time to anywhere in Manhattan. And last but not least, you have a cheap laundromat almost around the corner (very useful when you plan to stay longer than a few days). I'll definitely come back =D
Kathryn and Vanessa are great hosts. Very nice, easy going and open minded persons. They helped me when I needed. The dogs are very nice too. You ve got to love dogs to stay there. But I wasnot a "dog lover", I never had dogs, and finally I liked them a lot, they were my friends !
I loved this neigborhood too, the atmosphere, the food, the fact that both 2, 3, 4 and 5 subway lines are 1 block away, and the A,C line is close...
The accommodation is ok, you have private SMALL :) room with almost private bathroom, dogs are very active but cute, hosts are very friendly and nice, ideal combination.
Both kathryn and vanessa were lovely and extremely welcoming and helped me work out the way round new york.
A good choice, if you just a place to crash. There are few grocery stores around the area, esp. love the Carribbean bakery. Location it's close to a major subway station. Distance wise from Manhattan, kinda far. About 40-1 hr depending what train you take, express or local. Thanks for hosting, Kathryn.
What more can I say than: these Girls are awesome! Friendly, welcoming and always up for a talk on cultural or political issues.
If you don't like dogs, this might not be a place for you. But if you're a dog lover - watch out - you might want to steal one of these, and take them with you. They are absolutely lovable - all of them.
Sleeping on the couch in the center of the apartment, was really no problem. I had the hours of sleep that I needed and more too.
I can highly recommend this place for everybody who's looking for a more personal and NY-insider experience.
Kathryn is really good host, she is kind and she helped us with everything. But this room is only FOR really LOVERS of DOGS!!! She has got 4 dogs (two small and two big) and they are everywhere in a flat and they little stinks:-D I was a little scary first time, but dogs was kind. If you love luxury this accomodation isn´t for you. It is really cheap accomodation and you have to thinking about it as about really cheap accomodation.
the stay at kathryns and vanessas place was a very pleasent experience. their dogs are so very cute and also very active. if you give them some attention, you will love them and they will love you.
so if you like dogs, i can recommend to stay at kathryns, cause you will get in to touch with them. the price for the accommodation is very fair and you will get much more than only a room. we found a welcoming atmosphere and very open hosts, who were also intersted in showing us a NY apart from the touristroutes.
thanks a lot girls
Kathryn and Vanessa saved my ass by hosting me for one week at the end of August. One day before flying to NYC from Europe I still didn't have a place to stay. But they accepted my last minute request and it turned out to be an awesome stay in New York :) Their place is located in Brooklyn and is around 20 minutes from Downtown Manhattan by a subway.
Kathryn and Vanessa are very friendly and helpful and their 4 dogs are super cute. As Kathryn said "I came as a gust but left as a friend". I am coming back to NYC to visit them during my Christmas holidays :)
Kathryn and her friend Vanessa were an excellent breeze from California and i enjoyed hosting there stay in Brooklyn. There were very respectful and fun to be around. I enjoyed tasting there vegetarian cuisine and hope to see them soon if I ever get a chance to visit the West Coast.
