My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time staying at Essence Arenal. We stayed in one of the private tents: there was an amazing view of the lake off the balcony. The staff was welcoming and very knowledgable about the area. They all seemed to love being there, which is always a good sign! We decided to extend our stay by 2 nights and they were very accommodating. With those extra 2 days, they also help us figure out some great things to do in the area, making it an incredible trip. We had a few meals at Essence: all of them were made with fresh, local ingredients and were absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced.
If you are planning on staying, make sure to rent an SUV, the drive off the main road is quite rocky and filled with pot holes. Also, there's only a handful of signs to get to Essence- follow the signs to the Butterfly Conservatory and you'll get there just fine. (And make sure to visit the Butterfly Conservatory during your trip!)
Oh what an experience, I ended up staying another night. I quite enjoyed the tent, I didn't know what to expect when I got there, but it was very worth it. I had an amazing view of the lake, I could see the volcano, as well has stare deep into the jungle. When I got there, there was a turf battle between the monkeys, you could hear them screaming at each other.
The "staff" was amazing, everyone was so accommodating, nice, and willing to give whatever information they had to answer any questions. I really enjoyed them and their chats. Breakfast, lunch and dinner being available was awesome. It made it so I didn't have to drive into town much, and it was a good way to meet others staying at Essence. The road into Essence is rough, if you don't know how to drive dirt roads, or not well, I consider getting a 4X4 when you rent. It's about 45 minutes from La Fortuna, and has great access to the volcano and trails.
I took the trail all the way into the back of the jungle, where I was able to walk straight out of Essence from, and end up at a waterfall, with a dog that decided to follow me all the way there and back.
Such an amazing experience, I would love to come back. Thanks to the people, the actual tents, and the location.
Essence was pretty much what it said to be. Great location, great staff, clean and simple. Just remember it is 40 minutes out of La Fortuna on s bumpy road. But if you know that then no reason to complain about it. Maybe wifi connectivity at the common area (hot tub) would of been nice.
I had an amazing time at essence Arenal. We arrived late at night, and were brought to our amazing tents. It felt like sleeping in a tree house; you could hear monkey and see the whole sky from the tent window. In the morning, we woke up to see one of the most incredible views I've ever experienced. We practiced yoga in the morning, and cooked a family meal together at night. Overall, the experience at Essence was simply perfect.
Wonderful thank you all
My experience was great! This the place you want to stay if you want to see more of the really Costa Rica. It's a community not a tourist destination. Everyone who works here is very helpful and can arrange anything you might need. I personally enjoyed the tents more then a room. It's a great place to meet fellow travels.
What a beautiful spot to find! Perched up in the hills of El Castillo (The Castle), you're past La Fortuna and much closer to the Volcano National Park (you pass the entrance on the way here). Unlike the people staying in La Fortuna, you actually get views of BOTH the volcano and the lake! After one night, we were convinced we needed to reserve a second night and enjoy more time here.
The view alone might be worth it to stay here, but there are also beautiful grounds surrounding their organic farm and fresh water swimming pool. They practice permaculture and grow many of the ingredients used in their kitchen. We also took the night hike through the rain forest and farm and the guide is extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and friendly. We never made it to the 6 am yoga class, and we would have liked to try the sweat lodge—perhaps next time!
Considering Essence Arenal's location, we actually thought it would be nice if breakfast were included in the rental price, rather than an addition. The communal and hands-on demo style for dinner was enjoyable and a great way to exchange travel tips and learn about others. While very limited in dining options up here, there is Pizza John's which has fantastic (you guessed it) pizza and delicious homemade ice cream!
I stayed in a private jungle tent and loved it. It was more than enough space for one person and could easily fit 3 or 4 people with the bunk beds.
The common lounge area outside with jacuzzi and hammocks was perfect for a much needed break after hiking. The food and service was remarkable. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. I wish I could have spent more than one night there.
WOW!!! What a spectacular place! We felt welcomed and valued by all the staff. The attitude is one of positivity and fun. The food is GREAT and generous. A couple of ways to fix the tent: pls put gravel all the way to the entrance as the ground got very mushy. Also more options to hang wet clothing would be great. But these are very minor compared to the joy we got being awoken by howlers and symphonies of birds. Hummingbirds were our neighbours ... Oh I forgot to mention ... The road to this paradise bad.... Really really really bad. But it is worth it.
Thank you Deb for your honest lovingenergy and opinions.. It was nice to have you have you and the family here.
Thank you and all ways love.
