This was clearly a miscommunication; Thomas brought in a cleaning person the day before to look everything over and neither of them indicated washing some dirty dishes and taking out some trash (all sorted in bins) was beyond the responsibility of the cleaner.
This was Thomas' first ever hosting experience. We suggest that in the future, he clarify his expectations with guests beforehand. Coordinating a move to our new apartment nearby was very hectic and we were relieved that a cleaner was coming so there was less work for us to stress over.
Thomas' first step was to leave this angry review – calling or emailing us would have given us a chance to return and clean up. He knew we were close by but didn't bother to contact us. He still hasn't replied to our email apology.
We normally leave our hosts' spaces in as good a condition as we found them – clarifying his expectations around the cleaner he had hired would have prevented this whole situation.
