What a wonderful place! We spent a few days in the village with Joanne and enjoyed every minute of it. The house is beautifully decorated and has an authentic Tuscan feel to it. We especially enjoyed sitting out on the upstairs patio in the evening - watching the moon set behind the mountains. The surrounding views are spectacular, and the village hasn't lost any of it's origional charm. Joanne was a great host - recommending places for us to visit. She also gave us plenty of space in the house when we needed it, but was always on hand to help. She baked us fresh bread and stocked us up with fruit and the essentials for breakfast. There were lots of small touches, too - such as the homemade olive oil soap in the bathroom, and the fizzy strawberry apperitivo! We enjoyed swimming in the nearby reservoir at sunset - very refreshing and relaxing and so liberating. The highlight was visiting the nearby shepherds' refugio - and going for a short trek in the hills. Again, wonderful views, fresh air and a great restaurant/bar serving hearty, rustic food. Thank you Joanne for your hospitality. We enjoyed our stay with you immensely. Grazie mille.
A book of superlatives, to describe the experience at Joanne's fabulous house, seems insufficient to express the blissful 2 days that I had the privilege of enjoying. Right from the outset, the inviting pictures of the listed house left me with no doubt that it would be a perfect retreat.
Arrangements with Joanne to pick me up from the train station went swimmingly well & within a few minutes realised why she is a Super-host. A delightful chat on the way home helped me learn not only about Vagli Sotto & it's surroundings but also put me at ease about the next couple of days.
The majestic views of the mountains (that Nature created) from the bedroom/terrace, effortlessly brought a smile, but interiors of the stone clad house that Joanne created was so tastefully decorated that made me want to hug the house :) Every nook and cranny screamed of history & wondered how such a big house is kept so immaculate. Undoubtedly, all credit to Joanne for her relentless efforts in ensuring all guests have the best experience on all fronts. She does go out of her way, not only in preparing/providing ample breakfast choices but also being there for your every comfort need.
Hiking through Vagli Sotto, trekking in the mountains, discovering mountain streams, a liberating swim in the reservoir, sunbathing in the valley etc. and coming back to the cool house to freshen up and sit on the terrace with a glass of wine & reminisce about the day with Joanne were a few of my favourite things (sorry, a bit Julie Andrews-ish)
Surrounded by mountains gave it a feeling of being sheltered from the outside world.Watching the village lights at a distance coupled with the celestial dance from the terrace brings in the simple pleasures of life. I inadvertently did a digital detox that was long overdue & found it quite peaceful. It's a perfect retreat, a gem of a place & felt rejuvenated.
… & for all of this, Thank You Joanne.
We had a lovely time at Joanne's beautiful house in the magical village of Vagli Sotto. Joanne was there to welcome us after our journey and was a fantastic host throughout our week long stay. We went for some lovely walks around the lake, went swimming in rivers, lakes and the local swimming pool. We drove up to Campocatino for the wonderful views. All in all, it was a fantastic, relaxing holiday and I would wholeheartedly recommend that you book to stay at Joanne's house. It is amazing and I will certainly tell all of my friends and family to go and visit!
Lovely simple Tuscan retreat. Joanne was a superb hostess. The village is small with excellent pizza at The Good Evening restaurant. We very much hope to go back
My husband and I were amazed by the views offered by this cottage. The free parking was also a huge plus, and it fit our long Audi station wagon with no problems. The inner rooms look just as they do in the photos, but you can't see just how tidy they are. I'm sure these old houses usually collect a lot of dust because of all the stone and wood beams, but there was none to be found here. And the sheets and towels smelled so mountain fresh! The duvet and blankets also smelled like they had been just washed. The bathroom was also spotless. To continue on the cleanliness subject, we saw Joanne cleaning linens for the next guests to arrive as well... and this included freshening the mattresses. I've stayed in fine hotels and not seen this level of cleanliness. Majorly impressed.
Also, there were lots of homey touches throughout our stay. It started with a gift of delicious, fizzy local wine. It continued with soap made by Joanne in the bathroom. Also, she baked fresh bread for us twice during our three nights.
The bedroom and terrace offer magnificent views of the mountains. The terrace has plenty of room for people, and is full of sun. And you can even enjoy the mountain view from your bed.
Each day, we enjoyed breakfast courtesy of Joanne. Fresh bread with cheese, butter, and ham. Fresh fruit and yogurt. Coffee and orange juice. I believe there were also croissants and a few other things. We also enjoyed drinking the fresh spring water from a nearby pump.
Joanne provided great recommendations for things to do during our time in Vagli Sotto, including where to park for the Thursday market in Castelnuovo, where to take long walks, as well as the best value pizza place around. She's also a nice person with a sunny disposition, and we enjoyed talking to her. We didn't see her so much, despite the fact that we shared the apartment. It usually felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.
We really would recommend staying with Joanne for a few nights, as well as Vagli Sotto. This area is an outdoorsman's paradise. Hiking, swimming, caves, etc. are all within reach.
Thanks for the hospitality, Joanne! We had a great time.
We had a lovely stay in Vagli Sotto. We used the location and house for some relaxing, like reading a book and discover some neighboorhouds nearby. The house has much charm, the room is great, bed is lovely. The terrace with view is stunning!! Host is very very friendly and helpful. Great way to experience Tuscan lift in the north.
We had a wonderful stay at Jo's picturesque home in the beautiful town of Vagli Sotto. She was incredibly helpful in giving us advice on the area. We especially appreciated the guidebook she wrote covering the unique history of Vagli Sotto. The room has the best view in town of the impressive Monte (website hidden) was very sweet and accommodating with any questions or requests we had. She even baked us a delicious loaf of bread! Definitely a great place to stay.
Joanne is the most wonderfull host ever. Felt as if she was a dear and good friend. She opened her home for us and made us feel at home. The descriptions of the house and the area is so true and actually is the area more breathtaking than described. We spend 4 wonderfull days here and will return I am sure.
Beautiful home in an idyllic location - we loved our stay in Vagli Sotto. Thanks Joanne, we loved staying with you and your recommendations were wonderful! - bring good walking shoes and enjoy the countryside!
We had a glorious few days at Joanne's home. The views from the bedroom window and terrace were breathtaking. The breakfast was great. Joanne was on hand but not intrusive. We went for some lovely walks. Would definitely go back.
