Great place! We absolutely loved the apartment and Las Terrenas. The apartment is quite spacious and very comfortable. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The only additions that would make it better would be a toaster and microwave. The Many excellent restaurants nearby serve large portions and it would have been much easier to heat them in a microwave. The lication of the apartment is great!
Helena was very friendly and helpful. She provided some excellent suggestions verbally and the written guide she provided was of great use.
We would definitely stay here again when we return to Las Terrenas - hopefully for one month next time!
Coordinating our visit to Las Terrenas with Brian and Helena was a breeze. Our questions were answered promptly and completely. It was great to meet Helena when we arrived and having Patricia meet us at the airport was a treat as well. She gave us a little unofficial tour around town before dropping us off at the apartment and gave us tips on where to eat and places to visit.
We were treated so well and had such a great vacation I hesitate to be negative in any way, but, as was mentioned in an earlier review, the apartment could use a bit of freshening up. It’s tough to battle humidity in this part of the world, so you can expect its effect on wood and metal, but a fresh coat of paint and maybe some upgraded fixtures would make the apartment feel as welcoming as the people we met. We know our way around a kitchen, so were easily able to work around the absence of a microwave or toaster. We had packed expecting there to be a working washer and dryer, so it was a little disappointing that it wasn’t working, but it wasn’t a game-breaker. If you’re ok with staying at a cottage, you should be ok with this. The main negative is the noise from motorcycles, scooters, 4-wheel ATVs, cars, trucks and the associated horn-honking. It is non-stop, all day. It calms down at night, though. If you spend your days out doing things - like we did - it’s not that bad. Besides, you’re right at the ocean and on the edge of town - that’s where things are happening.
500 words isn't enough for everything I've written about our excursions to see the whales in Samana Bay, the caves and birds at Los Haitises National Park, the beaches, the food, the vibrant life in town, the art, the fish market, etc., so this will have to do, I suppose.
Overall, we had a great time. Sure, nothing’s ever perfect on a trip, but you have to be adaptable and make the best of things. There weren’t enough negatives to even come close to ruining our trip (which included my wife, me and our 21 year-old son, on a rare family vacation together). We’d go back to Las Terrenas, for sure.
Wow - amazing place! Exactly as Brian described it! His friends Helena and Dominic who were helping out were amazing as were his employees. We had a plumbing problem on Christmas Day (these things do happen!) and they sent over the plumbers immediately as well as coming themselves. They helped us plan our trip and gave us some local contacts which is so critical in a country like the Dominican Republic. I must have asked a million questions and they answered them all patiently. They even invited us to visit their beautiful mountain home. I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to visit this area.
We had a great time in Las Terrenas. Our hosts were very kind and responsive. The apartment was clean and comfortable.
This apartment is perfectly located-- literally across from a beautiful beach and down the street from local restaurants and bars. It had everything we could ask for and Brian's very helpful list of suggestions of restaurants and things to do helped us explore places we would've never found on our own. Staying at this apartment and exploring Las Terrenas/Samana was our favorite part of our trip through the DR! Highly recommend!
Great place, perfect location across from the beach and short walk to town. Brian was a perfect host, there to meet us and answer any questions and offer suggestions. Loved the stay and would love to go back.
Brian's apartment has an amazing location. The view off the porch is stunning and he was very friendly and helpful. I can't wait to go back!
My stay with Brian (and his girlfriend Ica) exceeded all my expectations. The room was great and Brian took the time to help me whatever I needed help with and even picked me up at the airport for a nominal fee. We even had dinner both at home and at a restaurant snd went out one nigt in Las Terrenas :-). My first week in Las Terrenas couldnt have been better.
Las Terrenas is an interesting town, especially if you venture into the dominican/haitian part of town a couple of minutes from the beach. It is totally safe and if you don't mind being approached by the moto-concho drivers/fruit vendors/souvenir shop employees it is a great experience ('No thank you' is 'No, gracias'). If you need a cheap place to eat either go to the restaurant across from Western Union, Pizza Coco (a 2 minute walk from the apartment) or Picca Pollo Express which is at an intersection 5 minutes into town, ask around people are more than willing to help if you apporach them with a smile and an 'hola' (it does help a lot if you speak/understand a little spanish so brush up on it before going!). Around Las Terrenas I would recommend going to Playa Bonita (ask Brian directions for the secret beach there) and El Límon, a giant waterfall 20 min and half an hour on horseback from Las Terrenas. Transport can be done either on moto-concho (50-150 pesos depending on where you are going)' guagua (busses that run through town and are also quite cheap, be prepared to sit very close to other prople as they pack them full) or taxi. I'd also recommend purchasing the guide book called 'Rough Guide to the Dominican Republic' which has a map and a few pages on Las Terrenas. Other than that just ask Brian who will help you/answer all the questions you might have.
Brian's home was exactly as he describes it. It was comfy, spacious, clean and included all the amenities we needed and we felt super safe during our entire stay. Brian was also super! He picked us up at the airport and was available via email prior to our trip to answer questions and when we called to ask how to work the washer.
The location was perfect to walk around town and/or rent an affordable scooter to visit other beaches and sites. We highly recommend the horseback riding with Carlito. Super personable guy who treated us like friends instead of tourists. The waterfalls at the end of the ride are well worth it.
One word of caution regarding the town... we happened to be visiting during the national Labor Day and long weekend for everyone so Las Terrenas was busier than normal as locals travel north for the long weekend. However, if you stay in the center of town be prepared to hear loud music blaring from passing cars, roaring motorcycles. and the smell of exhaust throughout the day/night as Brian's home is situated right along the main road. However, the back guest room is pretty quiet.
Overall, we had a fantastic time and recommend Brian's home.
Brian is respectful considerate and quiet guest. He keeps the apt tidy and clean andactually I didn't do much for him. Also, thank you for the gift you gave me.
All the best in another country.
Brian is an excellent guest, he is very kind, organized and respectful, I definitely recommend him, he now how to have very interesting and productive conversations and best of all he is humorous so you will be laughing with him. You will want to have him has a guest again, I'm sure about it.
We have said that Brian was a good guest. We have the chance to say that Brian came back to stay with us. He is a great communicator and also an excellent cook. We recall with pleasure the aromas caused by his culinary specialties.
