This apartment is perfectly located-- literally across from a beautiful beach and down the street from local restaurants and bars. It had everything we could ask for and Brian's very helpful list of suggestions of restaurants and things to do helped us explore places we would've never found on our own. Staying at this apartment and exploring Las Terrenas/Samana was our favorite part of our trip through the DR! Highly recommend!
Great place, perfect location across from the beach and short walk to town. Brian was a perfect host, there to meet us and answer any questions and offer suggestions. Loved the stay and would love to go back.
Brian's apartment has an amazing location. The view off the porch is stunning and he was very friendly and helpful. I can't wait to go back!
My stay with Brian (and his girlfriend Ica) exceeded all my expectations. The room was great and Brian took the time to help me whatever I needed help with and even picked me up at the airport for a nominal fee. We even had dinner both at home and at a restaurant snd went out one nigt in Las Terrenas :-). My first week in Las Terrenas couldnt have been better.
Las Terrenas is an interesting town, especially if you venture into the dominican/haitian part of town a couple of minutes from the beach. It is totally safe and if you don't mind being approached by the moto-concho drivers/fruit vendors/souvenir shop employees it is a great experience ('No thank you' is 'No, gracias'). If you need a cheap place to eat either go to the restaurant across from (website hidden), Pizza Coco (a 2 minute walk from the apartment) or Picca Pollo Express which is at an intersection 5 minutes into town, ask around people are more than willing to help if you apporach them with a smile and an 'hola' (it does help a lot if you speak/understand a little spanish so brush up on it before going!). Around Las Terrenas I would recommend going to Playa Bonita (ask Brian directions for the secret beach there) and El Límon, a giant waterfall 20 min and half an hour on horseback from Las Terrenas. Transport can be done either on moto-concho (50-150 pesos depending on where you are going)' guagua (busses that run through town and are also quite cheap, be prepared to sit very close to other prople as they pack them full) or taxi. I'd also recommend purchasing the guide book called 'Rough Guide to the Dominican Republic' which has a map and a few pages on Las Terrenas. Other than that just ask Brian who will help you/answer all the questions you might have.
Brian's home was exactly as he describes it. It was comfy, spacious, clean and included all the amenities we needed and we felt super safe during our entire stay. Brian was also super! He picked us up at the airport and was available via email prior to our trip to answer questions and when we called to ask how to work the washer.
The location was perfect to walk around town and/or rent an affordable scooter to visit other beaches and sites. We highly recommend the horseback riding with Carlito. Super personable guy who treated us like friends instead of tourists. The waterfalls at the end of the ride are well worth it.
One word of caution regarding the town... we happened to be visiting during the national Labor Day and long weekend for everyone so Las Terrenas was busier than normal as locals travel north for the long weekend. However, if you stay in the center of town be prepared to hear loud music blaring from passing cars, roaring motorcycles. and the smell of exhaust throughout the day/night as Brian's home is situated right along the main road. However, the back guest room is pretty quiet.
Overall, we had a fantastic time and recommend Brian's home.
My sisters and I are so glad we chose to stay at this listing! Brian's home was exactly as billed -- impeccably maintained, beautifully furnished, filled with valuable little amenities (including things we didn't even realize we'd need, like a much-appreciated blender and coffee press), and perfectly located. It's literally across the street from the beach, just about a five minute walk from the center of town. And Brian himself was beyond gracious. He welcomed us with a Presidente upon arrival, helped us with logistics even weeks before we arrived, offering to set up excursions and introduce us to locals, and, during our stay, responded to our questions literally within hours. He shared great local knowledge with us, including a rundown of the different beaches, the best means of local travel to various spots, and the best place to watch the sunset over mojitos. We recommend this beautiful apartment and this exceptional host with unqualified enthusiasm!
This was my first trip to the DR and after listening to stories from numerous other travellers, LasTerrenas turned out to be a great choice as it offers ridiculously beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters and quite good food. The majority of expats are French speaking with a smattering of Italian. Speaking either Spanish or French here will most definitely make your life alot easier.
My host, Brian picked me up and delivered me back to the airport for a nominal fee. Upon my arrival there was a chilled bottle of Prosecco waiting (in previous conversations with Brian I had mentioned that I liked this wine) and while I unpacked he prepared a delicious paella.
The guest bedroom was clean and quite large, with ample closet space. The shuttered bedroom windows overlook a small side street and the terrace doors open onto a narrow deck that overlooks a small gravel parking lot for quads and motorcycles. A scented candle perfumed the air. The queen size bed was rather firm. My private bathroom came equipped with a clothes washer and spinner (dryer not really needed here). The hand held shower had good water pressure. Hand and bath soaps and a towel were provided.
Breakfast was not offered but I was invited to share lunches or evening meals regularly and I was able to use the kitchen facilities.
The apartment is in a very good location, literally across the street from terrific beaches and minutes away from the fish market, loads of eateries and town. The area however is very noisey with motoconchos and early morning roosters so bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. (the local pharmacy had sold out of earplugs when I was looking for them). The front and back gardens are well kept.
the ATM's are very unreliable in Las Terrenas so make sure to bring both debit and credit cards as well as some US cash. Most shops and restaurants do not take credit cards.
Look forward to going back soon!
Me, my sister, and our friend stayed at Brian's place in Las Terrenas for three nights. It was absolutely perfect. There are two large rooms with queen sized beds- definitely would be comfortable for two couples or a family- two bathrooms with showers, a large kitchen and living room, a front porch with a table perfect for having your morning coffee while looking out at the ocean and the beautiful garden, and a back porch with a hammock for relaxing. The town beach is right across the street, and you can walk a little while in either direction for more secluded parts of the beach. It is also just 5 minutes from the town, which has a good balance of tourist amenities while not being strictly tourist-only. Great eating, shopping from local artists, and night life were all steps away. Brian met us when we arrived and was super helpful with recommendations for what to do, where to eat, etc- he even sent us more recommendations for our trip to Santo Domingo. And we got to know Anel the gardener/handyman on the property who was also super nice and helpful.
Since we got home we can't stop talking about how we want to go back for another visit- and of course, we'll be messaging Brian when we do!
Brian as a host was phenomenal--great communication, super helpful, and also very flexible with last minute changes with our reservation.
Brian's beach house is ideal for:
-families or small group of friends traveling to Las Terrenas
-for folks who may need R&R and get work done at the same time. The place is peaceful, lots of shutters for light, wifi!
-location is right smack at the center of town! If you don't have your own transportation, then you should stay at this beach house--beach, restaurants and shops are a hop and skip away!
-while there are many good restaurants, having access to a kitchen (Brian has the place stored pretty good and you just replenish whatever you use) helps when you want to just stay in.
A beautiful and comfortable home conveniently located right across the street from the beach! Brian was a fantastic host who was helpful before and during my trip, offering recommendations on how to get there and what to do. With lots of windows and typical wooden shutters, there is a refreshing breeze and lots of light in the house. There are screens on the windows so no insects in the home. The bedroom is a nice size and the bed is super comfortable. Right off of the guest bedroom there are doors that open to the garden and a hammock.
There is so much to do in Las Terrenas - a horseback ride in the mountains to a waterfall, hiking through a nearby property owned by some of Brian's friends, long walks on the beach or dancing at night. Brian helped arrange the activities that I was interested in. Of course, if you want to just sit on the beach with a cool drink, there are many to choose from, walking distance or by motorcycle taxi. I didn't kite surf, but there are classes available. There are many restaurants to choose from, but you can also cook in Brian's fully stocked kitchen. Lots of European cuisine options are available, and also typical local Samana cooking using coconut.
Brian prepared a meal for me while I was there (delicious!). He also made sure that I made my bus back to Santo Domingo to fly home. The bus has a convenient pickup right in front of the house. We waited for pickup watching a beautiful sunrise on the beach with a to-go cup of freshly brewed coffee that Brian prepared. I highly recommend staying with Brian, and visiting the most beautiful part of the Dominican Republic that I have seen.
Brian is respectful considerate and quiet guest. He keeps the apt tidy and clean andactually I didn't do much for him. Also, thank you for the gift you gave me.
All the best in another country.
Brian is an excellent guest, he is very kind, organized and respectful, I definitely recommend him, he now how to have very interesting and productive conversations and best of all he is humorous so you will be laughing with him. You will want to have him has a guest again, I'm sure about it.
We have said that Brian was a good guest. We have the chance to say that Brian came back to stay with us. He is a great communicator and also an excellent cook. We recall with pleasure the aromas caused by his culinary specialties.
