Recommended, particularly because the neighbourhood is safe (with police presence and private guards on the nearby roads), well-connected with public transport (a popular bus station is nearby that brings you directly to major destinations), and the hosts were friendly yet never intruded on our privacy. Also, the chalet had excellent air-conditioning and wifi, providing comforts following the days's adventures.
There were some slight niggles due to the chalet's placement in a lush tropical garden: there were both daytime and nighttime mosquitos and sitting outside the chalet attracted about one bite per *minute*, foreclosing the option of eating outdoors unless covered in insect repellant. Perhaps this was only because we visited in the summer or have particularly delicious blood-types.

Recomendo a todos, eu espero voltar algum dia ;) Abraços, Marga
My farewell words to Paula and Miguel , owners of the property - "I am so glad and grateful to have booked this place. The location proved to be a perfect haven to recharge from the bustle of Rio and the world cup fiesta. The flat became a home away from home with my needs and request attended to sincerely, efficiently and lovingly.
For those looking to wake up to the sounds of Rio waves, this location might not be ideal, albeit the energy of the land, the trees and the hosts including Consuelo is inviting ,warm and welcoming making all else fade in comparison. And if you are seeking times of absolute silence - barking dogs could pose disturbance - which for me is part of the music of life.
The space was adequate to accommodate my son and me comfortably for 2 weeks. The patio nestled by the lush indigenous Brazilian fruit trees became my zen zone. The location offers a deep generous connection to nature sights and sounds ... the feel is organic and artistic.....with soul and character.
Safety and convenience was added benefit of this residential area- bus stop 5 minutes down the slope and all other modes of transport easily accessible. Lots of restaurants, convenience stores and Largo de Machado metro station at walking distance brought ease to our stay.
Thank you Consuelo, Miguel and Paula for all your help and loving hospitality.
I spent 2 months in this lovely studio apartment. It was a fantastic experience. Firstly, Consuelo is wonderful. She's helpful and a great guide to getting around Rio. Secondly, the apartment is very cute and situated in the gardens of a big house. It's very private with a balcony over looking a private garden. I spent many mornings having breakfast surrounded by monkeys and toucans. A magical start to the day. The apartment was cleaned once a week and the kitchen and bathroom are in great condition. Aside from the neighbourhood dogs occasional bark it is pretty silent most of the time. Of course this is Brazil and on weekends you can hear a party happening somewhere in the forest that surrounds the house, but they never go on through the night so it shouldn't disturb you.
The area the apartment is situated is a safe residential neighbourhood. I felt perfectly safe walking back from the local bars or restaurants at night. Less than 5 minutes from the house is a bus station with buses going all over the city. It can take a while to get to Ipanema or Copacabana by bus (50 minutes at times) but by taxi it will take literally 10-15 minutes and only costs about $10 or £5. The bus also takes you to the nearest metro, which is a short ride to Copa and Ipanema. I would say my only reservation about taking this apartment is if you want to walk out of your apartment and be on a beach. But to be honest the benefits of this place out weigh the location issue. You get to be in a safer area, your apartment has outdoor space (most apartments in this price range near the beach don't seem to have much light let alone outdoor space) and the people running the apartment are wonderful. All in all I would highly recommend Consuelo's apartments and in particular this one.
Staying in the studio was very nice and comfortable. The garden is amazing especially in the mornings. Paula and Miguel welcomed us very warmly and they were very helpful if we needed something. We are happy that we choose the studio of Consuelo and that we met her and P. and M. Also the two dogs Bela and Preta- they are such cuties so that we wanted to take them with us:-)
Unfortunately the dog of the neighbour is barking a lot- so take your ears peg with you ( I did that). We would come back any time :-)
Thank you very, very much!!!!!
The place and the hospitality was perfect! We spent 4 nights and it felt that we had long vacation. The chalet is located in the middle of a tropical garden of a beautiful house. It’s very quiet and perfect if you want to get away from the city. Consuelo had left some fresh fruit, coffee, water… which was very nice.
The bus station was one street away with many buses. The communication with Consuelo was very easy and she was always available for answer to our concerns.
I highly recommend the place and we hope to come back.
We spent a lovely 10 days in this beautiful jungle cottage! Consuelo was wonderful, quick to respond, easy to work with and very helpful, going out of her way to give us detailed answers to our questions about Rio. The location is perfect if you are looking to stay in a local neighborhood and want to explore both the city center and the beaches of Rio. After a quick intro to the area by Paula and her daughter we successfully traveled by public transportation for most of our stay, using taxis when we wanted the convenience. The cottage is right up the road from a major bus stop, a 20 min walk or short bus to the Subway and a few blocks from Corcovado (which made it incredibly easy to catch a bus/cab to and from even though we only speak a meniscal amount of Portuguese!). There are grocery stores and restaurants within a 5-10 min walk and the kitchen was adequate for cooking simple meals on the stovetop. The only downside was that there were often dogs barking at night, which might be troublesome if you are a light sleeper. We are so thankful to have found this fabulous place!
The chalet was a fantastic base for us for our first ever stay in Rio. The neighbourhood is quiet and safe but it is very quick to get to all of the main attractions and places of interest in the city, particularly Christ the Redeemer: the train station is only 5 minutes walk.
We enjoyed making breakfast in the neat little kitchen, enjoying a beer on the patio amongst the tropical plants and calling the chalet home for a few days. The bed, the shower and so on were excellent.
Perhaps the best thing of all is Consuelo. She gave me a very warm welcome and although we never needed anything, she made it clear she was only a phone-call away. It was obvious she genuinely cared about our comfort and enjoyment; her perfect English is another bonus.
I heartily recommend this chalet or the other one if you are alone or a couple and looking for a quiet and safe base close to the centre of Rio that you can comfortably cook and live in for a short or a long stay.
Thank you for the lovely words, George. You are welcome anytime ;)
We had a lovely time at the chalé. It is quiet, safe and still pretty close to a lot of sights in Rio. We would stay there again. Consuelo is a great host and very quick in responding to our emails. Also Sandra the housekeeper was very nice. So were our favourit dogs Bella and Preta - if they've let us we would have taken them with us :)
Thank you very much for everything ! Muito obrigada :)

I am an American cousin of Paula's in Miami and have had the great pleasure of staying at her B&B (pre and post B&B) many times during the course of our lives and I cannot endorse too highly the location, charm and hospitality found there in Cosme Velho. Her and Miguel's friendliness and hospitality will add to the stay, but the charm of the accommodations are over the top. The location of the residence on a cobblestone street that winds up the mountain to Santa Teresa and the Christ statue atop Corcovado and to the spectacular Pineira National park along the ridgetop of the mountain couldn't be better. Just a walk or a jog along the paths in the park are breathtaking in the vistas, botanical diversity of the jungle, and you can see families of monkeys swinging through the trees! I'm looking forward to our next visit!
Paula and Miguel are great and long time friends. I've known Paula all my life!
Their house in Rio is super cozy, located in one of the most charming areas of the city. I would definitely recommend them anytime.
Paula and Miguel are GENTE EXTRAORDINARIA, I have enjoyed being with them and meeting them as well, while in my travels...... Super....... .-!
