Our stay at Lanikai Sonrise was magnificent.
First of all the location is priceless. Lanikai Beach is just 2 minutes away, and getting to Kailua with all its shops and restaurants is a 5-minute car drive. The sunrise at Lanikai Beach is beautiful and definitely worth getting up early.
The studio itself is very spacious with a big kitchenette (fully equipped with a dining table) and living room area, and has a very comfy bed.
What tops this all are the hosts to this place: Maureen and Barney. They are such a super friendly couple and make you feel at home right away. If you have any questions, they are always ready to answer and advise. We had the great opportunity to have dinner with them and their family/friends.
We will hopefully return to Lanikai soon and would definitely love to stay here again.
Maureen and Barney, mahalo nui loa for having us and being such great hosts.
Aloha – a hui hou kakou.
The studio was perfect for us (a couple) especially because one of our highest priorities for our Hawaii vacation was to be near a beach. The studio is a few steps from one of most beautiful beaches we have experienced. The white sand at Lanikai Beach is powdery soft. We walked the beach at sunrise and sunset during the seven days of our stay. We also swam in the ocean at the beach and snorkeled using the snorkel equipment supplied (free) by hosts Barney and Maureen. One day we rented a two-person kayak at a Kailua shop and paddled out to Flat Island from Kailua Beach. One can also paddle to the e want more distant Moku Islands.
Walking from the studio to the nearby trailhead, we took the fantastic Pillbox Trail hike on the ridge high above Lanikai Beach. From the studio, you can see the hikers on this trail along the ridgeline. At Barney’s suggestion, we took the hike in the morning while it was still cool. The views are fantastic.
The studio had all the things we needed to prepare our meals in the kitchenette. We bought food supplies at Kalapawai Market (walking distance), but most of our food supplies we purchased at the well-stocked Whole Foods Market and at Foodland in Kailua to which we drove in our rental car.
The internet connection worked very well. The air conditioner cooled the studio very efficiently (when needed) and two fans were also supplied. We opened the louvered windows and the front door to catch the ocean breeze. The gate on the property and the tall hedges provide privacy from the street.
Parking at the studio was extremely convenient—a few steps from the studio front door. The house on the property was not rented while we were there so there were no other guests. The laundry was very convenient and soap was provided. In addition to the dryer, the ample clothes line space was a big plus.
Barney and Maureen are wonderful hosts who shared many tips and ideas that made our visit more rewarding than we could have expected. Although Barney and Maureen live on the property, our privacy was respected fully. At the same time, we took advantage of opportunities to talk with Barney and Maureen and to learn more about their community, etc., and this added greatly to the richness of our stay. We extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to Barney and Maureen for making us feel so welcome and for doing those special things that made our visit truly memorable. Yes, the sad final drive away from the studio through the lovely beach neighborhood to catch our plane home reinforced our intention to come back again.
Beautiful place, great hosts, truly walking distance to the beach.
Maureen and Barney were the nicest and most gracious hosts. They made our stay even more enjoyable than it already would have been with their friendly demeanor and great recommendations. The studio was perfect for the two of us, more spacious than it appeared in photos, with a great bathroom as well, in case the photos leave you wondering. We loved the delicious welcome bread and fruit, and were delighted that the studio was so well appointed with many amenities for cooking, picnicking, and beaching that we didn't even know we needed. The location simply cannot be beat, the beach is really just steps away, making it easy to come and go without planning and preparation. Thank you for such a lovely stay!
We had a great time in Laikai! Maureen and Barney were the most wonderful and kindest host ever - thank you very very much!
In addition to the cliche 'location, location, location' (which is just steps from a fabulous beach), I would add 'hosts, hosts, hosts'. The McKeagues are perfect airbnb hosts. Our stay was delightful. The little cottage is very comfortable and well appointed, with excellent WIFI connectivity and a very functional kitchenette. The cottage has louvered windows only, and thus it is not very acoustically isolated from the voices of guests staying at the house just beside the cottage and street sounds. The air conditioning (which is very effective) would largely mask those noises. We were very happy staying at the 'Lonikai Sonrise Studio' and highly recommend it.
This place is small but beautifully furnished and located in one of the best places in the area. It's just ACROSS the Beach, a white small but beautiful sandy beach! Close to Kailua, just ideal place to start the Hawaii islands. We enjoyed staying there!

Staying at Maureens Sonrise Studio in Lanikai was just amazing. The Studio is located very close to the beach and has everything you need from towles and beachchairs, ... and also the kitchen is well equipped. Although it is not very large, it offers enough space and is very cozy.
If you are up for a short walk, you easily get to Kailua Beach or also Kailua itself for some shopping. (There is also a Whole Foods in Kailua now)
Maureen & Barney were wonderful hosts. They were very kind and helpful, giving us great tips.
We would absolutely love to come back and stay there again. Thank you Maureen and Barney.
60 steps from beach access! This is in Lanikai, a beautiful small community of lovely homes. The beach is spectacular, not crowded, with white sand and turquoise blue water. You can even snorkel a bit here. The studio is small but has everything we needed. Kitchen has toaster oven, microwave and hot plate, and enough dishes, pans etc to do whatever you want. Maureen provided beach chairs with shoulder straps, finns for snorkeling, beach towels. Parking is right by the door. The Kalapawai market by Kailua beach has very tasty blueberry scones. If you are there on a Thursday, the evening Thursday market has lots of very delicious foods from different cultures, prepared on site. Maureen and Barney are lovely hosts, very helpful and kind. The studio is clean and well arranged. The on site laundry is a plus. We would definitely stay here again!
Awesome place. Awesome location. Hosts were wonderful, easy to get ahold of whenever I had a question. Perfect situation for being across the beach and being within reach of Kailua.
They had lots of towels too. Love that for a place on the beach.
