Melinda was a great host and did a wonderful job of making my family feel welcome. The location was superb being only a few minute drive to anywhere in San Diego. The tree room was larger than we had expected which was nice and it offers a ton of privacy! The planes didn’t seem to bother us we hardly noticed. Her dogs were very friendly and gentle with my three year old. Overall we had a great stay and this is definitely our first choice in the SD area! We cant wait to come again!
Perfect place for me to stay; I could check in with Melinda easily enough - and yet had my own space to come and go. Coffee in the morning was nice and strong - just how I like it!
Had a great time staying at the tree house. It is a separate part of the house with stairs leading up to it, a deck where I loved hanging out to do work in the sunshine, a "living" room with a desk and futon, and a cozy nook with low ceilings where the mattress is. Melinda was very welcoming and available to help with anything and I felt completely comfortable in her home. There are snacks, a teapot and even some San Diego guidebooks up in your room.
The house is pretty cool - lots of light, multiple outdoor areas, years of history, very fun decorations. There are a few people living in it and those I met were also very friendly but I didn't see them much. The two dogs are probably the calmest I have ever seen - very friendly but not intrusive.
This didn't bother me at all but, one thing to consider if you are looking for quiet is that you will hear planes flying overhead and sound isolation between the house and tree room is not great.
Located only a few blocks from a bus stop that takes you straight to downtown or North Park. There are also a few cafes, restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance.
I would stay here again!
Melinda was so helpful and accommodating! The treehouse is pretty cool, and the struggle up/down the stairs with all our luggage was worth it. We found ourselves hanging around reading some of the many books Melinda has on offer. Also, her pups Pancho and Lefty are beautiful! I already miss Pancho's surprise morning visits.
I had a wonderful time staying at Melinda's. The place is cozy and really private. There is great outdoor space both in the front and backyard and you also have your own little deck.
I was close to several cafes and shops in walking distance but I had my car with me and I was able to travel to Balboa Park and Downtown in only a few minutes. Her two dogs are wonderful and very well behaved.
The only critique is that planes do fly overhead every 5-10 minutes from ~6AM to 11PM. It didn't bother me but just something to note for light sleepers.
The room was cozy and comfortable and Melinda was a very nice host! We had a great visit and would definitely recommend this little retreat.
I had a wonderful stay with Melinda! The house is in a great location and the room is nice and private. Melinda made me feel very welcome and the dogs are great.
I can't speak highly enough of Melinda, her family, the pups, and Rancho Urbano. She responded to my inquiry very quickly and accommodated me on extremely short notice, but I would absolutely stay there again. I took advantage of the proximity to Balboa Park and the adorable galleries and cafes in the neighborhood, but could have easily spent days curled up in the courtyard with a book and a glass of wine and been quite happy. The room was large, clean, and well appointed (I'd forgotten how yummy juiceboxes are). The bathroom is charming and everyone loves a properly plush towel.
Melinda is attentive but not intrusive, and as someone who can be pretty shy and was in a fairly stressful situation thanks to Superstorm Sandy, I immediately felt comfortable and welcomed.
I loved the unique accommodations, it had everything one needs in a great location in Southpark. Melinda was a gracious host - I would highly recommend!
Our stay in Melinda's house was not as nice as what we expected.
For my part the good points of this stay were the great location of the house (10 minutes from Downtown by car and 5 from Balboa Park) and the kindness of Melinda.
Unfortunately, there are more bad points.
What was not stated in the comments or in the description of the room and which we deserved to be, is that the house is located right in the center of landing aircraft. So there are planes flying just above your head every 10 minutes. But from 11pm until about 7am there is not and with earplugs it still manages to sleep his account.
Then, the cleanliness of the room was poor ... The bedding and towels were clean but a stroke of general cleaning in the room would not have been too much, at least to remove the dust on the floor, the furniture, the curtains and the sofa ...
Breakfast consists only of cereal bars and kettle is available as well as tea bags and instant coffee.
Apart from that, you should know that Melinda has three dogs (two large and one smaller) it takes away from the room but still quite pervasive in the small alleys of the house.
Otherwise the bathroom was quite nice to share with a clawfoot bathtub.
Overall, a decent room for a night or two but no more!
