I have been a teacher/school counselor for 20 years. Secondary education is right up my alley, but I was moved to K-4 Elementary when budget cuts in my school district created a shuffling of jobs. Gotta love the tiny kids on cuteness and enthusiasm alone, but I have a special connection with middle school students that not all adults seem to have, so I would like to end up back in middle school at some point in the future. Middle schoolers crack me up and I can see past the orneriness to the goofy insecurity. I am a voracious reader (former high school and middle school English teacher), I love theatre (it was my undergrad major), and I am obsessed with West Coast Swing dancing. I also attend Zumba and barre classes several times a week.
The best trip I ever took was when we took 17 8th grade Spanish students to Costa Rica. We stayed in a private home/hostel so we were able to get to know a Costa Rican family. Also being an ESOL teacher, I do have some Spanish--although it is a bit dodgy since I moved to Oregon from southern CA---which enabled me to flirt with the young men who run the zipline in Monteverdi as well as get the kids ice cream in San Jose.
As I get older, I like my travel to include more nice homes and hotels with private bathrooms rather than "crashing" on someone's futon. I also tend to like city vacations with cultural activities more than outdoorsy things, but I have been fishing with my boyfriend a few times and I really like it. He says I'm freakin' lucky so far. I can do camping provided that the campground offers a hot shower, but "roughing it" beyond that is not in my DNA! I do have a thing about hygiene.
I am funny and I have a snarky sense of humor. I am pretty no-nonsense and direct. My favorite comedy film is The Full Monty. I like situational humor and irony. My favorite film of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird (also my favorite book) because I am a strong advocate for social justice and I prefer films that are well-written and well-acted to action films (unless they are really clever).
I want folks to feel comfortable and to love Hillsboro/Portland. As a guest, I try to be flexible and to leave places as nice or better than I find them---actually, I think that's how I like to be in every situation.
