The apartment is really stylishly decorated and Jonathan is helpful, thoughful and pleasant. The area of the apartment gives great connections to lower and upper Manhatten. If you just want to get in and out of the city id imagine it would be fine, although nothing happened to us i wouldn't like to hang around the area itself.
The apartment is well designed and private, the kitchen mate was rarely around i only met him once. However i think he does keep an eye and feedback to Jonathan about whats happening-we had a conversation about the cat with a small misunderstanding but there was no problem. The cat is fine, hes sweet, yet territorial. Light sleepers may want to bear in mind about the train and the shop downstairs which plays music which you can hear. This wasnt a huge problem for us just took a little getting used to.
We left this apartment feeling it had been a choice and it was in difficult circumstances during storm sandy. Worth the price!
I had a great time staying at Jonathan's place. The apartment is decorated beautifully with antiques all over, yet also really clean and impressively dust-free. The bed and pillows are so comfortable that I didn't even want to get out of bed most mornings. Jeezy , the cat, was a pretty easy-going little dude and very low maintenance. The location is great, in walking distance to the L, M, J, and Z trains (note to those unfamiliar with the subway: the Knickerbocker station is closed for renovations, use Central Av if you wanna hop on the M.) It's upstairs from a deli as well, so it is super convenient. Jonathan left helpful notes around the apartment, preempting any questions I might have, and also left an extra toothbrush and some soap (I totally left my toothbrush at home so this was amazing!).
Regarding Bushwick - As a previous reviewer noted, the area is not fully gentrified yet. That said, I did not feel unsafe at all, even coming home late. I have a lot of female friends who live in this area and have never had problems. During the day most of the people out are immigrant workers and their families, at night mostly 20-something hipster types who are priced out of Williamsburg. If you head to the area around the Jefferson or Morgan L stops (1-2 subway stops or a 10 minute walk), there are some really good restaurants and lots of cool street art.
Jonathan was a wonderful host and made us feel right at home. The apartment was clean and had a great vibe. The shared kitchen was not an issue and we heard very little from the other person who shares the kitchen and did not see him at all. Jeezy the Cat is awesome and was easy to hang with and take care of. The is a plug for your iPad and surround sound, which we took full advantage of. The part of Bushwick where the apartment is located is close to an giant antique shop that Jonathan tipped us off on, a great natural foods market where you can buy some provisions, as well as a cute coffee shop, Roberta's, The Pearl, and The Northeast Kingdom if you are looking for spots to eat and drink. We would most certainly stay here again should we find ourselves in Bushwick!
Had a happy and comfortable stay at Jonathan's apartment in Bushwick. Jonathan was very accommodating and helpful, the apartment was clean and cozy. Jeezy, his cat, is sweet and playful and never a bother. You are only blocks from the L and M trains respectively and it is quite easy to get around Brooklyn and into the other boroughs. The neighborhood isn't swanky, but has a distinctly friendly and communal feel. Café El Mejor a few blocks away is a great place to start the day. I would definitely stay here again.
The apartment is totally charming. It's beautifully decorated, and a lovely place to spend time. Jonathan was great too, going well out of his way to make sure I had everything I needed and making himself available to answer questions. It is important to note the place is *small*, but it's definitely worth what you're paying and then some. Jeezy the cat is kind of a highlight (verrrry sweet and playful), but if you're taking care of him note that you'll have to be there mornings and evenings--so try not to spend the night at a stranger's house without planning ahead. (I did not do this, just saying.) Street noise is noticeable but not enough to be problematic. The neighborhood is definitely not all the way to gentrified; that can be a positive or a negative, depending what you're looking for. All in all I loved my time here and would happily come back.
Jonathan was a great host, friendly, good communication, everything as promised. The apartment is lovely, comfortable, clean, all in all a good deal for a private place to stay in NYC at this price point. Would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend to others.
That said, there are a few bits of info about the place that I feel like I should convey, some positive feedback and some just to make sure that it's a good fit for future renters.
First, don't worry about the shared kitchen thing. I used the kitchen regularly and literally never saw the kitchen-mate, or any evidence of his presence other than a glass in the drying rack.
Second, the transit access is great - the place is a block from the M train, a few blocks walking to the L (not clear from the description in the listing). In fact, it's close enough to the M that you can hear the (above ground) train go by - it's not very loud in the context of city noise, but might be less than ideal for a super light sleeper. On the plus side - you're really close to the train!
Third, the place is definitely "cozy," particularly the entryway ("foyer") and hallway which are pretty narrow. It's really more like a studio apartment with an extra wall than it is an actual one-bedroom apartment, which worked out fine but wasn't totally clear to me from the description of the place. So, just an FYI on that.
And, last - for any LGBTQ renters, Jonathan and his kitchen-mate are very gay/queer/etc-friendly, so no need to worry about any potential weirdness there.
I think that's it! Thanks again to Jonathan for a great stay, and best of luck in your future sublets!
Jonathan is a repeat guest of ours and he is always amazing. We hope that we have the opportunity to continue to host Jonathan again and again. We love having him at the Cottage.
Jonathan was a joy to have, he was very clean and tidy and friendly. We would definitely recommend Jonathan ! and we hope to see him again soon!
Jonathan was an extremely thoughtful and nice guest, and very easy to communicate with. Whenever he left the apartment he always asked if I needed him to pick anything up (so nice!). He was complimentary about the apartment and was very gracious. He left behind some tasty chips and salsa (always appreciated), and I'm glad we had the opportunity to host him.
