San Jose homeowner residing part time in the Sierras.
We had a great time at Sweet Retreat--we have hard-to-impress teenagers, who were entertained the whole time with the movie theater (which they quickly discovered also projects video games 8' wide) and the combo pool table/ping pong table. The house was in good repair, is charmingly decorated, and has a great set of amenities. Clearly put together and maintained with love. We were instantly comfortable. Icing on the cake--it's close enough to Murphys for mom and dad to go wine tasting and soaking in local color for a few hours while the teens happily hung out at the house.
This is a nice funky house with lots of space. Lots of entertainment is provided, a great pool table and also a ping pong table. The movie theater is a blast!
What a great place. Our friends and family just loved it. The rooms were comfortable and the movie theater was a major plus. First time in years we were able to stay up for the dawn of the new year - mainly because we were all playing a great game of pool. David was very responsive to every email and made for a very worry free transaction This is on our short list for future Bear Valley stays.
My wife and 2 daughters(2 year old and 14 year old) went stayed at sweet retreat 4 nights over thanksgiving. The thought was stay somewhere relaxing and then make our way to Yosemite for 1 night. Never having been to Yosemite I was a bit nervous that we would miss out since we were only staying 1 night.. I can tell you that 1 night in Yosemite is sufficient(unless you are doing longer hikes/camping). Yosemite is so beautiful but you don't feel like you have gotten away from anything...lots of people. Sweet retreat on the other hand was exactly what we were looking for. We had fires in the back under the huge trees night and day. We played pool and ping pong inside. The wood burning stove inside was nice but so was the fact that there was heat without it! The temperature was about 50 and no snow...but about an hour drive up the mountain their was a frozen pond we could skate on(mosquito lake). If you want to feel like you have really gotten away from it all without doing backpack camping then this is the place. A list of activities we did
1.) playground for 2 year old 3 min walk from sweet retreat. In addition they had basketball and Frisbee golf course.
2.) wine tasting about 30 min drive. I think they had 20 some vineyards.
4.) Skating on pond at mosquito lake
5.) zip line and Cave Walk - This was great
6.) Fires and beer/wine outside
7.) No Cell Phone Service!!
8.) Internet to check on the football scores
9.) Lots of movies in David's in-home theatre.
We actually ended up staying at the cabin and not at the tent, so this review would be for David and the cabin.
We absolutely loved the cabin. It is very well furnished, maintaining a balance between rustic and modern life. It is artistic and functional at the same time. Also, i cannot say enough good things about the location of the house. The trees surrounding it and the beautiful log fireplace outside... the whole ambience is serene and lovely.
David sent us detailed instructions and we had no problem with anything at all. Thank you, David for sharing your beautiful place with us.
David's place was exactly what we were looking for!
Not only was the place comfortable, close to attractions & clean - but David was phenomenal to work with before, during and after our stay.
We will definitely be returning - and highly recommend this listing to all!
My friends and I wanted to spend some time in the woods. We wanted to hike, swim, read, cook, star gazing, and relaxing. We got all that and more staying at the Sweet Retreat.
For hiking, we went to Calaveras Big Trees State Park. We did the North Grove trail which is flat and easy, but is interesting to go through due to the history of the place. Then we followed the signs for the overlook, where we found the head of a trail that was challenging (drops 1,000+ft to the Stanislaus river) but was so, so beautiful.
For swimming, we went up to Lake Alpine, where we did some reading, sun-bathing, and we swam in the (very cold) lake. I really wish we had a way to hitch stand-up paddle boards or kayaks up to the lake because it would've been amazing to go around the lake and see its many views.
For star gazing, there was an open field in the recreation center behind the house where we found an open clearing and watched the many many stars in the sky.
The Wifi was really fast for streaming music and movies. The movie theater was awesome and a really nice touch. There are huge trees right outside the house with a campfire and a grill. The house was well stocked, and we had a great time!
Dave was the best host imaginable! With the forest fires raging nearby and smoke in the air, Dave gave us honest and up-to-date info to make sure our trip was what we were expecting.
The conditions were great and the teepee made our kids dreams come true!
The cabin is also a palace of comfort in the Sierra foothills and just minutes to some amazing scenery. Only a 5 minute drive from some if the biggest trees in the world.
Dave really helped us to have a memorable vacation that was relaxing and thrilling! Thanks dave!
Response from David:
Aw shucks. :-) Thanks. Hope to see you all again!
We had a great time! The cabin was very comfortable-- lots of space, well furnished, and provided with plenty of kitchen equipment for cooking. David made sure we had all the information we needed well before we arrived. All instructions were crystal-clear. During the day we spent most of the time hiking, boating and kids loved the swimming pool which we could walk to in about 3 minutes from the cabin. The movie theater and a teepee were kids favorite places to hang out in the evenings. Overall great experience and we hope to visit David's cabin again!

Thanks for leaving a review. Much appreciated!
A perfect camping experience. The Teepee is large and clean. We were 2 adults and 2 children and had more than enough room. There was an outlet run to the tent we used blow up a second air mattress. Both fit fine. The fire pit is a perfect place to begin and end the day, with plenty of wood available. It was quiet, peaceful and private. Not like the crowed camp grounds. A real find! The kids loved it, as did the grown ups. When you go, turn left on the second Shoshone and if it is dark, look for the carved eagle at the address. Lake Utica is a nearby treasure, it has beautiful granite outcroppings (Not Union) Utica. The Big tress park has some amazing hikes for all ages and fitness levels. A visit to Columbia on the way was a perfect for our kids who learned a bit about out states history, they offer gold panning, candle making, a stage coach - all for a small fee. I would camp here again, it is a real value in a great location. Davis Sweet is flexible and professional. A pleasure to rent from.
Beautiful person and great experience. As soon as he walked inn I felt the positive vibe and after that all went very smooth. He is extremely clean I felt like no one stayed at the place:) The place was untouched.
David is always welcome back to my home.
