I live in Sydney and love exploring other parts of Australia and the world. TS Eliot wrote,
"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time."
... and the more I travel the more this becomes true for me. One of my other favourites, Paul Simon, sang,
"A man walks down the street, it's a street in a strange world.
Maybe it's the third world, maybe it's his first time around.
He doesn't speak the language, he holds no currency,
He is a foreign man, he is surrounded by the sound, the sound ...
Cattle in the marketplace, scatterlings and orphanages.
He looks around, around ...
He sees angels in the architecture, spinning in infinity
He says, Amen! and Hallelujah!"
... and for me this is the thrill of the travel experience: getting lost in the hubbub of a foreign land and finding something you never even knew you were looking for. I love meeting people and I love the thrill of discovering new places: for me there is nothing better than sharing a drink with a friend, new or old, in a place I have never been.
