I am a semi-retired academic. I've worked at several universities in Western Australia and in new Zealand.
In the last two years I've designed and built an extension to a nineteen thirties bungalow in Fremantle. I found it very satisfying to design and build a passive solar extension, which minimises heating and cooling costs (only fans in summer). The extension has provided three studies: one for my wife Susan, who is working on her PhD; one for my daughter Bella who is working on Postgraduate Diploma; and one for me. Other bonuses are a separate library, a cellar, and a little tower form which one can see offshore islands and ships entering and leaving Cockburn Sound.
The position of our house is ideal in that it is well served by public transport, with a bus every five minutes, and in that we have enough ground to grow a good vegetable garden.
We enjoy living within a ten to fifteen minute walk from the cinemas, restaurants and other venues in the centre of Fremantle.
And we enjoy being close to nature. We are just 800 metres from the Indian Ocean, a short ride from several beaches and close to marine reserves at C Y O'Connor Beach and Woodman Point.
